PAGE FOUR UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS THURSDAY, MARCH 18, 1943 Jayhawk abberwock HONORS FOR BLACK Charlie Black, who is still on the campus, is continuing to receive his share of basketball honors. Besides being named on Great Lakes all-opponent team, on the Olathe Clipper's all-opponent team, as a substitute on the Associated Press Big Six team, and on the United Press second Big Six team, he has received the added honor being chosen on Pic magazine's All-American team along with Beisser of Creighton, Phillip of Illinois, Kotz of Wisconsin, and Rock of Southern California. WYOMING FAVORED Our choice of the team to take the Western NCAA playoffs in Kansas City March 26-27, is Wyoming. The Cowboys won 23 out of 24 games this season—dropping an early season game to Duquesne in Pittsburgh. Milo Komenich, 6-foot 7-inch Cowboy star, set a new Madison Square Garden record in December when he sank 10 field goals against St. Francis which went down to defeat 38 to 63. However, that record was broken the next night by Harry Boykoff of Brooklyn's St. John when he scored 45 points against Philadelphia's St. Josephs. While on their eastern trip the Wyoming snapped tucked Rochester's 22 game winning streak, 68 to 46. JABBERWOCK Milo is left handed and shoots a hook shot off his ear that nobody has ever figured out how to guard. He has scored 408 points this season in the 24 games for an average of 17 points a game regardless of the opposition. The 1943 Great Lakes basketball team won 34 games and lost 3 games in contrast to 31 victories against 5 defeats in 1942. Illinois, Notre Dame, and Northwestern were the only teams to down the sailors. However, the sailors also defeated Notre Dame and Northwestern. They avraged 59.3 points per game while their opponents averaged 39.5. Last year's team averaged only 51.6 points per game. ** * * * * * Notre Dame had one of its better seasons as is shown by its record of 18 victories and 2 defeats. The Irish scored 1071 points in 20 games for an average of 53.5 points a game. Their most important victory was the one over Great Lakes last week when they downed the sailors in an overtime period 44 to 42. Up to that game the naval quintet had won 24 straight games. Oklahoma Frosh To Play In NCAA Drafted by the NCAA committee to represent the 5th district in the Western basketball tournament at Kansas City, March 26 and 27, Oklahoma's Big Six conference runners-up is readying a couple of freshmen players for the meet to bolster the team and replace their totally departed sophomore crop. Bruce Drake, Sooner coach, is striving to polish, in the short time at his command, Charles Pugsley and Jim Mitchell, two six-foot freshmen who played last year on Okla homa City Classen High School's strong team. Unlike Wyoming, Texas and Washington, who have had access to freshmen all year and thus have had time to blend them into their team plan, Oklahoma's freshmen are just starting out, owing to the Big Six conference's dilatory action of staying the date of freshmen eligibility until March 1, 1943. BUY WAR STAMPS . . . Cessna Dropped From AAU Meet Cessna Aircraft of Wichita was eliminated from the AAU basketball tournament in Denver last night by the Poudre Valley quintet from Ft. Collins which left the court with a 55 to 49 victory. With forward Dick Smith sparking the Cessna team, the Kansans led at the half 27 to 25. However, the Poude Valley team came back in the second half to take the tight game 55 to 49. Dick Smith was the game's high point man with 22 points. Owen Smith scored 16 points for Poudre Valley. John Buescher, one of KU's Iron Men, scored 7 points for the losers. Hollywood's Twentieth Century-Fox, one of the ruling favorites, was dropped from the running by a fighting little team of air corps men from Williams Field, Arizona by the close score of 51 to 50.
