PAGE FOUR UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS THURSDAY, MARCH 11, 1943 Swimming Meet Tonight --by Don Keown Jayhawk abberwock CAUSE GAINS MOMENTUM We hear that those who are working for Roger Whitworth's participation in conference athletics, far from lying down after their defeat two weeks ago, are in actuality gaining additional momentum, and that responsible student leaders have become more and more interested in the cause which is taking on broader significance. For those who wonder just what did happen at Kansas City, it seems that W. W. Davis, as promised, did make the motion against barring colored athletes from conference sports but there was no second to the motion, and it was shelved. Whitworth in the meantime discussed the matter with several Oklahoma and Missouri trackmen, and found them not at all adverse to running against him. A suggestion which is favorably viewed by several University trackmen is the making of Negroes eligible to run in the coming Kansas-Kansas State dual meet. One team member reported a conversation with Kansas State coach Ward Haylett, and stated the Aggie mentor said he was not adverse to colored participation in the conference meet. Haylett reportedly said he could have turned out a much better track team this spring if he could have used talented colored men on the Manhattan campus. Perhaps Haylett and coach Gwinn Henry can get together on a plan which would allow these men to compete in the dual meet at least. BASKETBALL ECHOES Said the Topeka Capital's Gene Kemper of the Jayhawk cagers: "That undefeated Big Six record should furnish some fine foxhole reflections for the major portion of this squad that today is marching into war. Such an accomplishment has been attained only twice before in Big Six history—by Kansas in 1936 and Oklahoma in 1929. The Germans and Japs will be hearing from the crew that got this job done." He then concluded: "This club must be ranked among Allen's best—and that's a mouthful." Other honors are pouring in for the Jayhawkers, with Charley Black being recently named by the Great Lakes team as the best man they faced in their 37 games this year. Thus Black got the nod over Illinois' Phillips and Creighton's Beisser. Black was also named by Pink Hinkle, the sailors' coach, on his all-opponent team. Whitney Martin recently devoted his associated press column to Fhog Allen, quoting the Kansas mentor on his defense of the four foul rule currently under fire. The rule is necessary for good clean team play, according to Allen. JABBERWOCK Papers are calling Southwestern's Steve Frazier better than Lloyd Tucker, former Winfield ace, who in our opinion was just as good as brother Gerald of Oklahoma . . . The Wichita Boeing Bombers, on which Marvin Sollenberger plays, recently upset Bartlesville on the Phillip's home court . . . Oklahoma is a logical choice to represent the fifth district in the NCAA meet . . . Texas is a certain entry in that journey . . . Baseball season is rolling around, and we'll stick with those Cardinals again. Buescher To Wichita To Join Cessna Team John Buescher, Jayhawk basketball center, left today for Wichita where he will join the Wichita Cessna Bobcats for the trip to Denver, where the team will compete in the National AAU basketball championships. The Cessna team plans to play several games while enroute to Denver, where the tournament will get underway Sunday. The Bobcats, one of the tournament favorites, have won tuneup games during the past two evenings, having defeated a Wichita all-star team 53 to 31 in Anthony, and then downed the Mt. Hope Nursery team 64 to 41 in Wichita the following night. Gross take away from home, however, was larger for the 1942-43 season. Gas and rubber rationing limitations on travel and the lower student attendance were not compensated for by the city's increased population, it was said. From 300 to 1,000 student reservations were empty at each home game, authorities said. Wartime withdrawals from school were believed to be responsible for a portion of that shrinkage in attendance. A New Record A total of nearly 100,000 fans saw the Jayhawkers in action this year on home and foreign courts, according to Earl L. Falkenstein, secretary of the KU Athletic association. Paid admissions in actuality totaled 96,-526, a new record for a Kansas team bettering last year's 67,662 attendance by approximately 9,000 fans. The wide margin by which the Jayhawkers took the championship was another factor, it was said, since the final Kansas State game, usually a good crowd attractor, had no conference significance and was comparatively poorly attended. Big New York Crowd Largest crowd to watch the Kansans perform this year was at Madison Square Garden, where Phog Allen's charges downed a favored Fordham team before 14,700 fans. It was the second Jayhawk basketball appearance in the huge garden in the University's athletic history. On the same Eastern trip 8,000 fans watched the Jayhawkers wallop St. Joseph's at Philadelphia.
