PAGE FOUR UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS THURSDAY. DECEMBER 31, 1942 K U Goes After Fourth Road Victory - - - Whips Undefeated St. Joseph's Black Leads Rampage Against St. Joseph's Displaying unexpected earlyseason strength in walloping three strong Eastern opponents on the holiday road trip, the Jayhawk quintet goes after its fourth straight victory against St. Louis University tomorrow night. Optimistically expected by Coach Phog Allen to win possibly one or two games, Kansas loosed its previously stuttering fast break against highly rated Eastern fives. St. Bonaventure fell 53-22 at Buffalo Saturday. Fordham offered the closest brush, losing to Kansas 30-31 in Madison Square Garden Monday. Impressive Last Night But the Jayhawks saved their most impressive act for last night. St. Joseph's, previously undefeated and among the East's strongest fives, dropped 63-38 before 8,500 fans at Philadelphia. Charlie Black gave Philly a preview of coming performances as he scored 20 points. George Senesky, Eastern scoring sensation, counted 19 points for bewildered St. Joseph's. Ray Evans tallied 16 points from his guard post, his biggest spree in two years at Kansas. The Jayhawkers shredded St. Joseph's defense, hitting 37 points in the second half after leading 26-18 at halftime. The Philadelphians defeated Oklahoma A-M 45-39 earlier this season. Evans Breaks Tie Evans broke a 29-29 tie against Fordham with a setup that downed the Rams 31-30. Kansas led through most of the game, manacling Fordham's highscoring offense with the "transitional man-for-man defense with a zone principle." The New Yorkers knotted the count at 24-24 and 28-28 late in the second half, then went ahead 30-28. Bob Fitzpatrick hit a charity toss, and then passed to Evans for the winning basket. Two missed free throws later cost the Fordham squad the game. Kansas won the game on free throws, hitting eight of 12 while Fordham missed eight of 14. Otto Schnellbacher hit five of his first seven attempts as he paced Kansas to the 53-22 victory over St. Bonaventure. The sophomore guard scored 16 points as the Jayhawks scattered scoring duties. Oklahoma broke even, losing to Camp Grant 34-37 Dec. 23 and defeating Bradley Tech 57-28 Saturday in road games. Improving Nebraska bowed to Indiana 40-39 at Lincoln last night. Ralph Heinzelman, Husker forward, missed a setup in the final seconds to give Indiana its sixth straight victory. Missouri lost to the Olathe Clippers 45-35 at Columbia Tuesday as Homer Wesche, ex-K-Stater, scored 18 points for the Clippers. "HAPPIE NOO-YERES" Too You — Yes Sir & How! Jayhawk abberwock F 1 0 3 0 2 0 3 2 0 — 11 F 0 2 0 2 1 1 2 1 0 0 — Strange Happenings What's the matter with the Jay-hawks? Instead of accepting matter-of-fact defeats as expected the cagers have performed much better during December than Kansas' last two basketball fives. From early season indications the Kansans were slated to have a moderately successful season and lose the Big Six championship to Oklahoma. But Kansas has not been playing like a second-rater on the holiday road trip. Coach Phog Allen, perhaps using "psychology," claimed that the Jayhawkers would be "lucky" to win one or two games. They would be lucky to win two games against St. Bonaventure Fordham, St. Joseph's, and St. Louis Yet Kansas defeated the first three, two by large margins. St. Joseph's was previously undefeated and had one of the East's high scorers in George Senesky, but he was throttled by the Kansas offense - defense. Fordham whipped Kansas in the Garden two years ago and ranks among the East's better five's this year. But Jayhawk defense held the Rams down. Kansas compiled an offense-defense record comparable to last season's marks. Scoring 53, 31 and 63 points and allowing 22, 30, and 38 points, the Jayhawks averaged 49 points offensively and allowed only 30 points defensively. Charlie Black led Kansas scoring with 37 points for a three-game average of 12.3. Otto Schnellbacher counted 32 points for a 10.6 average and Ray Evans 26 points for an 8.6 average. The athletic treasury will benefit from the road games. Kansas will make approximately $4,000 for the four games. After meeting St. Louis Friday, the Jayhawks play Olathe here Monday and open the Big Six race against Missouri in Hoch Wednesday. Then comes THE game: Oklahoma at Norman Saturday, Jan. 9. Thayer Scores 27; Dewell Leads PDT Former K-Statter Homer Wesche has blossomed as the Olathe Clippers' top seaker. Wesche, who tallied 18 points as the Clippers defeated Missouri 45-35 Tuesday, will play center in the Clipper-Kansas game in Hoch Monday. 4 Women Quintets Undefeated Corbin, IWW, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and Kappa Alpha Theta have emerged division winners with no defeats in the women's intramural basketball tournament. The Kappa's and Theait's will play Tuesday. The winner will play Corbin. IWW will play the victors in that game to determine the tournament champion. Delta Gamma and Chi Omega tied 10-10 last night. Both teams seemed to be suffering from an after-vacation slump and couldn't hit the basket. Leeta Nelle Marks again was high scorer for Delta Gamma. Betty Van Blarcom, forward, and Doris Bixby, guard, gave her strong support. Dona Burkhead was Chi Omega's outstanding player. Bv PAUL BROWNLEE A red hot Battenfeld five, paced by Ray Thayer with 27 points, crushed Alpha Kappa Psi 60-24 in the outstanding intramural game of the evening last night. Thayer hit the basket from the field 13 times and collected a single free shot as he amassed more points than any other player in intramurals this year. Harry Jennison rang up 10 points and Charles Craig dall countered nine more. Thayer Hits One-Handers The scholarship five, capitalizing on fast breaks, hit the basket for a good percentage of shots. Thayer used a one-hand jump shot that was good often. Those shots that missed were grabbed by alert Battenfeld rebounders and tucked into the basket. The Phi Delt's, galore with freshman players made eligible for intramurals by a new ruling, coasted to a 31-16 victory over the Sig Alphs. John Dewell and Kirk Scott, scoring twins on Newton's state championship aggregation last year, and Walt Quiring led the Phi Delts to victory. Dewell in addition to leading the Phi Delts on the floor collected 11 points and was high scorer. Quiring had 10 points and Scott hit 15 points. John Moore Wins John Moore Co-op, strong contender for Division III honors, dumped Allen Semi-co-op 33-21. Captain Dwight Bartlet led John Moore with 12 points. Playing in a guard slot the husky Co-op quarterbacked his team on the floor. Bob Heaston, fresh from the University varsity squad, collected eight points and used his angular body to snag nearly all rebounds. Gene Frazier with eight points and Jack Beal with six points paced the Allen men.
