Sweetheart bracelets, lockets, pins of fraternity and armed forces, all are evidence that Christmas has come—and gone. As one woman remarked, "Vacation was wonderful, but I just didn't go soon enough, nor stay long enough." Still, the week was to the average stu- New Year's Eve! This year's celebration will be handled in a different manner than usual by most students, since classes are being held today and tomorrow. This will be a damper on at least some plans, but the enthusiasm with which a new year is greeted will be present, regardless. The opening of the KU Country Club tonight will be the highlight of the celebration on the Hill. Four hours of dancing, noise-making, singing, entertaining, and being entertained are offered those who go. The one-thirty closing hour is another inductive factor. JOLLIFFE HALL .. A turkey dinner was served at noon, and the Coed Volunteer Corps arranged for gifts of cigarettes and candy for each. Many sailors were invited to Christmas dinner in Lawrence homes. The dance given for the sailors Saturday night in the Community building will be formal this week. Miss Smith is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry H. Smith of Rozel. Vows will be read by the Rev. Carl D. Mettling of the Bethel Methodist church of Chicago. Attendants to the couple will be Miss Glenndine Smith, sister to the bride, and Mr. Chalmer Woodard, Dodge City. Candle-lighters will be Miss Marjorie Sprier, Rozel, and Miss Evelyn Evans of Larned. Mr. Spite is a member of Sigma Delphi society, Order of the Mound, Sigma Xi, national honorary scientific society; Phi Lambda Upsilon, national honorary chemistry society; and the American Chemical society. After the ceremony will be a reception for about thirty-five guests. Following the reception the couple will leave for a brief wedding trip. Mrs. Spitze will return Monday to finish this semester. After January 15, the couple will be at home in Newark, Ohio, where Mr. Spitze will be research chemist in the Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corporation. MISS HEIDI VIETS daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Viets of Girard, has chosen January 17 as the date of her marriage to Donald L. Keplinger, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis W. Keplinger of Kansas City, Mo. Miss Viets has been employed as a reporter on the Ottawa Herald since her graduation from the University of Kansas in June. Her work will complete his work in the school of business next month. Graduation Dinner Bids Mailed Today Other numbers on the program for the evening will be group singing, introduction of senior officers, and the smoking of the traditional corn cob pipes. Invitations for the banquet scheduled for Jan. 7 for seniors to be graduated at the end of the semester were mailed today by the officers of the class of '43. Approximately 100 invitations were mailed, but other names may be added later when the graduation list becomes more complete. The banquet for seniors to be graduated in the middle of the year will be at 6:30 p. m. in the Kansas room of the Memorial Union building. Jim Gillie will be toastmaster for the dinner. Toasts for the evening will be given by Chancellor Deane W. Malott and Fred Ellsworth. A class prophecy and class history will be presented by students of the graduating class. The committee working on the class prophecy is composed of Sue Lindeman, chairman, and Maurice Baringer. Bib Githens is chairman of the class history committee with Myra Hurd and Don Welty assisting. Hal Ruppenthal, a navigator flying in the Ferry Command, who was graduated from the College last year, has been reported missing on a flight in the South Atlantic. "All seniors to be graduated in January who do not receive invitations within a few days are asked to call Evelyn Nielsen so that their names may be added to the guest list," Willis Tompkins said. The banquet is being financed by the University from the commencement funds. Officers for the class of '43 included on the committee are Willis Tompkins, president; Virginia Tieman, vice-president; Evelyn Nielsen, secretary; and John Conard, treasurer, Jim Gillie has been working on the committee as a student representative of the students finishing at the end of the semester. American Alumni Council Aids In Military Morale Mr. Robert Sibley, of the University of California and president of the American Alumni Council, announced that the organization's efforts are now being directed toward boosting the morale of college men in the service. This announcement followed the meeting of the Board of Directors for the Council, Dec. 18 and 19. in Chicago. Fred Ellsworth, secretary of the alumni association at the University and a member of the Board, attended the Chicago meeting. The Council is formed of alumni associations from some 300 major universities and colleges in the United States and Canada. "We feel that our colleges and universities are keystones to democratic national action in war and in peace," said Mr. Sibley, "and our alumni associations propose to sustain them with all the power at our disposal—financially, and spiritually." "We have underway joint plans to aid in mental stimulation and morale of our college men in service by extending means of contact with them even in London, Algiers, Sydney, Chungking and other headquarters that may be set up. "We are now carrying forward, in a unified way, aid in the procurement of talent for both military and civilian services, and we are making use of our unique relationship with the great majority of the outstanding personalities of our nation to spread a high sense of patriotism in all phases of the war effort. "We are organizing for more stress on civic and political participation on the part of our alumni and more widespread study of our American institutions and our relationships with the world." Today Is Final Opportunity Topeka (INS) — Today was the final day for registration of Kansas boys who had become 18 since last June 30 and draft boards were expected to be busy with them throughout the day. Chinese Students Speak to University Library staffs Staff members of the University libraries met informally last evening at the faculty women's club. Guest speakers were Mou Hui King and Philip Lin, students at the University from China, who spoke on education in their country. Other guests were Mrs. J. B. Dennis, Delaware, Ohio, and Mrs. C. M. Baker. Peterson Announced Engagement Sunday The engagement of Justine Peterson, fine arts senior, to Robert Kloepper, engineering junior, was announced after the annual Christmas party at Watkins Hall, Sunday, Dec. 20. Eileen Griffiths assisted at the traditional ring and candy passing ceremony. Mrs. Charles Esterly, housemother, was presented with a baby chrysanthemum corsage and Miss Griffiths' corsage was of gladiolas. Miss Peterson received an orchid.
