PAGE FOUR UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS TUESDAY, DECEMBER 22, 1942 Fiji 'B\Swamps Sigma Nu The Phi Gam B squad polished off a short week of intramural basketball with a 54-18 victory over Sigma Nu last night. Ned Smull paced the Phi Gam's and the field with 15 points. The flashy forward handicapped in his rebound work by a lack of height played a fine floor game and his shots were accurate. Bruce Whitenberger followed his teammate, Smull, in the scoring column with 13 points. Eugene Sallee with 11 and Charles Stucker with 10 points were the other high scorers for the Fijis. Stucker in addition to his offensive game played a fine defensive game. The only thing the Sigma Nu's had to offer was Skipper Williams, flashy forward, who was in the Fijis hair all evening. In the other B games Sigma Alpha Epsilon defeated Delta Chi 49-18, Alpha Tau Omega defeated Kappa Sigma 41-13, and Templin hall whipped Beta Theta Pi 23-19. Calvin Briny and Earl Musser with 21 and 18 points led the Sig Alphos to their easy victory. These two also controlled rebounds and floor play. Statistics compiled by Sigma Alpha Epsilon gave Briny a record of connecting with nearly two-thirds of the shots he attempted from the field. Musser sank about one half of his attempts. George Beck led the Delta Chi's with 11 points. Jack Nutter played an excellent floor game for the Delta Chi's. Beck Leads Delta Chi ATO's found the going easy also, winning 41-13 over the Kappa Sig's John Hayne and Kenneth Cates with 15 and 14 points caused the Kappa Sig's the greatest trouble. For the Kappa Sig's John Schlagel was high point man with five points. Templin hall led by Jack Doores with eight points beat a favored Beta five 23-19. Ed Colburn and Don Erb with six and four points respectively followed Doores in scoring for the Templin five. High scorer on the court was Beta Forward Dub Hartley who chalked up 11 points. He backed up his scoring with rebound work and a fine floor game. The Sooners lost to St. John's in Madison Square Garden 51-43 Saturday and last night Wisconsin whipped Oklahoma 48-37 as Gerald Tucker scored 15 points. Oklahoma will meet Naval Pier at Chicago Wednesday and Bradley Tech at Peoria Saturday, completing a five-game road trip. Capper To Sponsor National Divorce Law Washington. (INS) — The Supreme Court decision upholding Nevada divorces was followed today by announcements by Senator Arthur Capper of Kansas that he will seek enactment of a national divorce law in the new 78th Congress. "I think we ought to have uniform marriage laws," said Capper. "I am strong for it, and shall try to have legislation considered." Capper said that at one time many influential women's clubs backed the proposal for a federal law, but that state's rights advocates blocked it. ... — BUY WAR STAMPS ... — ... — BUY WAR STAMPS ... — Owen & C. Jayhawks Leave For Road Games Fifteen Jayhawkers left this afternoon for their four-game holiday road trip. Kansas will meet St. Bonaventure at Buffalo, Fordham in Madison Square Garden, St. Joseph's at Philadelphia and St. Louis University at St. Louis. Having started slower this season than any of Phog Allen's recent championship fives, the Jayhawks "will be lucky to win any games," as Phog predicts. St. Louis and Fordham appear the weakest of the four teams Kansas meets. St. Joseph's has not lost a game this season. St. Bonaventure regularly has a winning team. Movie Poll Selects Garson and Cooper For Stellar Work The poll was conducted among New York. (INS) — Gary Cooper and Greer Garson today were credited with turning in the best performances on the American screen this year by Film Daily. Cooper's portrayal of the late Lou Gehrig in "The Pride of the Yankees" brought him his second film-dom "famous five" victory. Miss Garson was credited with turning in the best performance by female stars with her portrayal in "Mrs. Miniver." War Work Uses Trained Artists New York, (INS)—Women with art training are fitting into the war picture to an unprecedented degree, so much so that approximately half of the recent women art graduates of Cooper Union now are employed in war plants in New York, New Jersey, Texas, and California, Prof. Esmond Shaw revealed today. Drafting of fuse-settings for munitions plants and silk screen work for tanks, fighter planes and bombers are among other wartime duties of the art graduates. Some students, attending night classes, are employed during the day in war plants while others are on leave of absence to fill war jobs. Most of the graduates are engaged in ship and plane production plants, with drafting and tracing work their particular specialty. Many of the graduates are in the service of the army and navy, turning their talents to map-making, statistical drafting and general drafting or retouching and engraving.
