The decision was made to end the first semester of the 1942-43 school year Dec. 23, and begin the second semester Jan.4 immediately following the Christmas vacation. The council is also considering the possibility of establishing the three semester plan as a war measure for the college. Saturday is K-State Band Day In spite of transportation difficulties, eleven high school bands have accepted invitations to attend the annual Band Day at Kansas State College next Saturday. Thirty-one bands attended last year. Plaques Honor Service Men An honorary plaque, the second to be dedicated this year, is being designed to contain the names of Washington University students at St. Louis who are members of any of the reserve forces. The first plaque bears the names of former students and faculty members who are now in active duty. The Washington University news bureau has received 300 names which will be added to the original plaque, dedicated Oct. 19. She gained experience in editing on the Sepia Socialite, a New Orleans Negro publication, which hired her in July. She also had experience on the Kansas City (Mo.) Call. The Baltimore Afro-American is one of a "string" of five Negro weekly newspapers; the others are the Washington Afro-American, the Philadelphia Afro-American, the Richmond Afro-American, and the New Jersey Afro-American. According to the International Year Book, the Baltimore paper is the third largest Negro paper in the United States, with a circulation of 62,987. Only one Negro paper is published daily—the World in Atlanta, Ga. occaye to cancel a New Year's Eve dance when their Christmas vacation was extended by the executive committee of the faculty. Under the new plan eight days have been added to the originally scheduled vacation, which now begins Dec. 22, and ends Jan. 4. The student paper and the student senate of the university presented numerous plans to the faculty committee agitating for a lengthened vacation until a new plan was adopted. Demand For Teachers Grows Daily-Chandler "Filling teaching positions remains as much a problem as ever," H. E. Chandler of the Teacher Appointment bureau has announced. Calls for teachers continue to pour in at the bureau office. A latter received this week from the Superintendent of Schools in Wyoming asked Mr. Chandler for help. Another letter from Ohio requested approximately 30 teachers. "The situation is the same throughout the 48 states," says Mr. Chandler, "and little can be done about it." Few students are graduating in the educational field, and a large number of those who do, are not teaching, Mr. Chandler explained Teachers are being drafted in increasing numbers, and others are entering some kind of war work.
