TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 1942 UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS PAGE FIVE Court Rules From Wooden Fruit Baskets to New Are Changed Glass Backboards Bv BOB TAYLOR Glass backboards have been made legal for colleges, and the stitched leather basketball recommended over the rubber ball for the ensuing season by the National Basketball Rules Committee. These are the latest of the ever-changing rules that basketball undergoes yearly. The game of basketball has evolved from a very crude into a highly scientific game during the fifty years of its existence. Looking at the original rules, we find that the ball was 27 inches in diameter. Later it was enlarged to 32 inches; then because it proved too bulky to handle, it was reduced to its present size of 29 inches. A wooden fruit basket was the first basket used, and the ball had to remain in the basket to count as a goal. A long pole was used to poke the ball out after a basket had been made. If a person fouled an opponent twice he was disqualified until a goal was made, and if it was evident that he had attempted to injure his opponent he was disqualified for the whole game. No substitutes were allowed. Striking at the ball with the fist was considered a foul, and if either side made three consecutive fouls, it counted as a goal for the other side. When the ball went out of bounds it was thrown in by the first person to touch it. In case of a dispute, the referee threw the ball straight in from the sidelines. There were 13 original rules. These were hung in the gym at Springfield Y.M.C.A. College at Springfield, Mass., by Dr. James Harrison in 1892, one year after he invented the game. A photostatic copy of these rules hangs in Dr. Forrest C. Allen's office. ADD SOCIETY---and Mrs. L. E. McCauley and Stanley, Leona, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. SIX-MAN GAME---bachelor of science degree in 600 WOMEN---bachelor of science degree in (continued from page four) most popular. More than 75 girls are enrolled in equitation. A course called recreational sports includes deck tennis, aerial darts, table tennis and shuffle board. Other courses are archery, fencing, tumbling and swimming. All of the women in physical education courses are in physical conditioning classes on Friday. In that class they march and do callisthenics. Recently they took Brace's Motorability Test, data from which will be compiled so that the women will know how they rank comparatively. GIFT TO COACH--bachelor of science degree in (continued from page four) team at fullback. He began his coaching career at Douglas, Wyoming and went from there to Pikeville, Kentucky, where he had championship teams both years that he coached from. 1931 to 1940 he was head coach and director of athletics at Elgin Academy, Elgin, Ill. "Rep." as he is popularly known has worked for a number of summers as a ranger in Yellowstone park. He also holds a commission as a "Kentucky colonel" and has taken up oil painting as a hobby. His brother Max starred as a Jayhawkter halfback during the seasons of 1936-37-38. BUY WAR STAMPS 'My Brother A Prisoner' Life Spared By Japs "I want to get my degree," he said, "but my summer plans are uncertain." He now plans to enroll in summer school. "But if I decide it will be too hot, I will return for three months service with the merchant marine. This country is so hot in the summer time," he remarked. Honorato's ambition this semester is to raise his grade in the mining engineering laboratory from second in the class to first. "He is alive, because he is a K.U. graduate," Honorato Echavez, junior in engineering from Cevu, Philippine Islands, said in speaking of his brother, Pastor, a graduate of the University. "My brother is a Japanese prisoner, captured with several companions. The prisoners with the exception of Pastor were killed. His life was spared because he was the only person who could operate the Sante Fe Water Controlling system," Honorato explained. Pastor Echavez received a civil engineering from the University in 1935 and a bachelor of science degree in the School of Engineering and Architecture in 1936. University of Texas food engineers are working on plans for cooking and drying carrots, according to similar processes followed for sweet potatoes. Honorato and Pastor enrolled in engineering at the University with the aid of Dr. Milton Curtis Cummings, who received his masters degree from the University in 1926, and doctor of philosophy in 1934 from Yale University, for several years principal of the high school at Cevu. Honorato has been in active combat serving as 3rd mate officer on deck in the U. S. Merchant Marine which is equivalent to a lieutenant (j.g.) in the navy. He completed two years service on August 21, enlisted in the army reserve, and came to the University where he is studying mining engineering. A CAUTION TO MEMBERS OF ROTC NROTC ENLISTED RESERVE...
