Better Outlook In Game Tonight
The Jayhawk basketball team makes its road debut at Newton tonight against Bethel's Graymaaroons in what has all the aspects of a gloom game, although the Kansan's do expect to perform better than against Denver University.
Kansas' coach, F. C. "Phog" Allen, is gloomy. His Jayhawkers
looked anything but impressive as they opened their home season with a last minute 36-35 win over Denver last night.
Bethel's coach, Otto D. Unruh, who learned his basketball from "Phog" on the Kansas quintet in 1927-28, is gloomy. He has no lettermen returning from last year's squad.

We simply do not have enough long distance lines to handle at a moment's notice all the calls that flood our offices after important war broadcasts, and after 7 p.m. on almost any evening nowadays.
It is as if thousands of citizens in every community appeared at the railroad station at the same hour, hoping to catch the same train.
Even before the outbreak of war we had foreseen that delays inevitably would occur on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Now it appears the volume of calls will be even heavier than we had anticipated.
We have done and are doing all we can to make ready for these big rushes, but they are setting all-time records. Thousands of conversations vital to the Army and Navy—vital to the defense of this nation—go over the telephone lines each day, each night. Some of them may delay your calls. We are sure you understand. We appreciate your co-operation, your patience.

Whether or not this rumor was started by the enemy's far flung espionage system or whether it is the result of fifth column elements operating exclusively within the United States is not possible to state with certainty at this time but it is certain, however, that this rumor was started by subversive elements within the United States hoping to split the country into two factions and hamper the nation's war effort.
Jayhawker Theater
The Jayhawker theater is closing after the last show this Saturday night and will remain closed till Sunday, Jan. 4, in order to install the latest and best projection equipment that money can buy.
