UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS PAGE FIVE ,1941 el WEDNESDAY; DECEMBER 17. 1941 PiKAMEetsKEK in FeatureTonight TONIGHT'S SCHEDULE By BILL PORTER 5:30—T.K.E. "B" vs. Sigma Chi "B"; Beta "D" vs. Delta Tau "D". 9:00—Pi K.A. vs. Kappa Eta Kappa; A. Chi Sigma vs. Theta Tau. 10:00—A.K Psi "B" vs. Phi Delti "B"; A.K Psi vs. Beta. In tonight's feature games, Pi K.A., expected to offer strong competition to the Phi Gam's and other top teams this season for the hoop crown, will be matched with Kappa Eta Kappa; and Beta Theta Pi, yet to find victory this year in games with S.A.E. and Newman I, will try to break into the win column in a contest with A. K. Psi. In last night's games Phi Psi, trailing 15 to 17 at the half, came back in the final periods to beat Delta Chi 33 to 26 in one of the "A" intramural basketball contests. Tall John Hallberg, Phi Psi center, had the rebounds under control in the last half, and led the comeback along with forward John Krum. Hallberg and Krum chalked up 12 and 9 scores respectively, and saw their team enjoy a seven point lead at the final bell despite a scrappy defense on the part of the Delta Chi's which never let down. Jayhawk Co-op also made use of a second-half rally to defeat its opponent, Rockchalk, 26 to 19. The game was a rough one, and officials Emerson and Emerson had to caution both teams about unsportsmanlike conduct. Score at the midway was 13 to 6 for Rockchalk, but Carroll Clawson and Clarence Rutherford led a second-half rally that reversed the results. Another Phi Gam Victory A strong Phi Gam "B" team proved to be too much for Pi K. A. "B", and came out on top of a 34 to 14 score. Connie Voelker and Bob Shears were the Fiji standouts, while Vesper Sheeley tossed in four field goals to account for most of the Pi K. A. scoring. Beta "B" swamped Battenfeld "B" 40 to 11 in the other Tuesday "B" contest. After a ragged start, Beta's began picking up in the second quarter as Bob O'Neil, guard, tossed in five field goals to make his team lead 16 to 4 at the half. In the second half, Beta guards Dick Chubb, Tom Lillard, and O'Neil kept the Battenfeld offense from penetrating very often, as Dub Hartley and Charles Cushing put on scoring licks to bring the final count to 40. Smith, Dole Report For Basketball Two new players reported for freshman basketball last night. They were Bob Dole and Bud Smith, both from Russell. Smith and Dole played freshman football this season and so have not been able to suit out for basketball before. Pitting two teams against each other, Coach "Mit" Allen ran his players through a fast scrummage. John Short fought it out with "Sparky McSpadden for top offensive honors. Short played with Bob Groom, Bob Dole, Bud Smith, and Ed Andrisevic. McSpadden teamed with Larry Stream, Ed Verbanic, Stan Hansen, and Ed Sayers. Verbanic definitely stood out on defense and Sayers made himself obvious for his sharp, accurate passing.. Volleyball Will Start After Xmas The first intramural volleyball games of the 1942 season will be scheduled immediately after Christmas, Dr. E. R. Elbel, director of intramural athletics, stated today. Dr. Elbel also said that intramural basketball would be resumed DR. E. R. ELBEL "Volleyball after Christmas" Tuesday, Jan. 6. Schedules will be nailed to intramural managers over he holidays. Organizations that have entered volleyball teams include the Faculty, Sig Ep, Beta, A. Chi Sigma, Delta Tau Delta, Kappa Sig, Delta Chi, Triangle, Phi Delta Theta, Phi Psi, Sigma Chi, Phi Gam, Sigma Nu, and D, U. Delta Chi was intramural winner in this event last year. Bob Johnson, letterman of two years ago, will not make the trip. He sprained his ankle last week in practice and altho he was suited up for practiee last night he is not yet ready to play in a game. TWO TILTS---good at rebounds. He has been injured twice this year, suffering a strained knee and a charley-horse, but has recovered sufficiently to play tonight. Eula Friend, University of Omaha beauty queen, received 98 fan letters after her picture was published in Look magazine. A MAN'S STORE for a MAN'S CHRISTMAS OBER'S (continued from page one) legiate competition without a physical handicap, he is expected to score even more. Hunter a Rebounder --good at rebounds. He has been injured twice this year, suffering a strained knee and a charley-horse, but has recovered sufficiently to play tonight. Hunter has lettered the past two years at guard and is especially valuable as a rebound man. He has a good left-handed push shot which he uses when close to the basket. Jayhawkers'Open Against Denver---good at rebounds. He has been injured twice this year, suffering a strained knee and a charley-horse, but has recovered sufficiently to play tonight. At center tonight is a converted guard, Charlie "Hutch" Walker. He is a rangy player, sound on fundamentals, and a good defensive man. He wears non-breakable glasses while on the court. Teaming with Hunter in the back court is another Hutchinson product and he also wears glasses while playing. He is Marvin "Solly" Sollenberger. Solly is the only full-time regular returning from last year's cochampionship team. His best feature is his defensive ability but he is also MARVIN SOLLENBERGER Hall is Youngest The fifth member of the starting five is the "baby" of the outfit in age-being only 20 while all the others are 21 or over. He is Vance Hall, sharp-shooting forward. Hall is the leading scorer to return from last year's Jayhawker squad. He is one of the fastest men on the team and has *perhaps the best eye on a set-shot of* *any of his teammates. One of the first substitutes to enter the game tonight will be Ray Evans at quarterback (center). Until this week Evans had not been impressive in practice but during the past two nights he has shown a decided improvement. Along with Evans as an early sub will be John "Thin Man" Buescher. He is the sixth letterman available tonight. Bob Johnson, the remaining letterman, sprained his ankle last week and will not be able to play until after Christmas. Buescher will go in the game either at quarterback or forward, probably the latter. Sophomores Ready Paul Turner and Charlie Black, sophomore forwards, will be seeing action early. If the height of the Pioneers seems to be too great an advantage, Allen will insert Jack Ballard, six-foot six inch guard, into the game. With Ballard, Black, Miller, Walker, and Hunter in the game at the same time the Jayhawkers could boast of a height average of better than six-feet three inches a man. This would more than equalize the Denver height but would be adding two sophomores to the quintet. Dick Barger is the tallest man on the Denver team, six-feet four inches, and also the veteran, being the only two-letter man on the squad. Barger is the leading offensive threat of the team and also the best backboard retriever of rebounds. Another 'Scraper At the other forward slot the Pioneers will start Earl Campbell, a six-foot three inch sophomore who never lettered in high school in Denver. He is called "Lefty" and is the best hustling big man on the squad. The second tallest man on the squad holds down the center position. He is Dick Murray, a junior who is also regular center on the football team In the Denver system of ball, Murray plays the post position. The veteran guard, Bobby Wilson, is the only short man on the team. He is just five-feet ten inches tall but the most poised man on the squad. He directs the team's offense from his guard position. At the other guard post is another sophomore giant, six-foot one and one-half inch Len "Chink" Alterman. He was all-city prep selection when playing with North Denver High School. Backing up this starting line-up are two other players who play nearly Good Subs Weaver's WE MAKE YOUR SHOPPING EASY Hi, Fellows Before Going Home Don't Forget That Gift — We Have Them from Soup to Nuts. Jacobs is considered the budding star of the Pioneers and will undoubtedly be a regular starter before the season is very old. Home — We Are at Your Service, So Don't Hesitate to Call on Us. Wrapped or Mailed For Your Convenience We Are Open Till Nine Every Nite Jacobs shoots well with either hand, and is a dangerous man on the VANCE HALL post. He is being touted as the most outstanding Pioneer basketeer for the next several seasons. Browning lettered last year at guard. He is the driving type of player and also a good set shot. He alternates with Alterman in starting Denver's games. Hargiss To Issue Call Track Coach W. H. "Bill" Hargiss indicated today that he intends to issue immediately after the holidays the first call for freshman track aspirants.
