PAGE FOUR UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 17, 1941 PHOG'S OPPONENTS ARE BUSV Opponents of the Jayhawker basketball team are certainly getting the jump on "Phog" Allen's boys this year. Big Six teams have participated in 13 games thus far this year and Kansas is the only school not represented in this list. Kansas State leads the parade with four games to its credit and is now on a four-game jaunt to the Northwest. Missouri is also on this same trip. Friday and Saturday nights the two teams will play in Seattle against Washington and Washington State in two double-headers. and Washington State in two doubles. These games should provide George Edwards of Missouri and Jack Gardner of Kansas State with all the scouting material they need on each other's team. other's team. In last night's game against Gonzaga, Missouri put on a last minute spurt to overtake the Bulldogs and win easily 55 to 46. The score was 42 to 41 with five minutes to play when George Constantz re-entered the game to spark the team to victory. Loren Mills and Don Harvey were also outstanding in the victory. RUPP'S TEAM BEATS NEBRASKA Other games of interest to K.U. fans last night saw Nebraska lose her first game of the season to Kentucky, 42 to 27. This loss was also the first one suffered by any Big Six team this year. The conference schools had won 11 games prior to the Cornhuskers defeat. games prior to the Cornishaster Any good feelings over this loss might be found at K.U. where it was one of "Phog's" boys that did the trick. Adolph Rupp, a member of Allen's last big team, which was in 1923, is present basketball coach at Kentucky. DENVER LOSES FOUR FOR FOUR Two other opponents of the Jayhawks this year played last night and both were soundly trounced. Denver University, playing her fourth game in six games, lost her fourth game. This time to Bradley Tech, 57 to 43. Denver's game against the Jayhawkers tonight should afford a certain amount of comparison with other teams that face Kansas this year. Denver has already played and lost to Creighton (they come here Feb. 10) and Iowa State (the Cyclones are here Feb. 16) easily defeated Bradley Tech Saturday night. Wichita University, a foe the Jayhawkers play Feb. 2 at Wichita, is on a road trip in the East at present and experiencing disastrous results. Last night the Wheatshockers lost another game, 49 to 33, to Morehead Teachers (Ky.) Only three lettermen are on Wichita's team. They are Marvin McDonald, junior forward; Maurice Curry, junior guard; and Tom Kinkaid, senior forward. Kinkaid is the leading scorer on the team. Two sophs complete their starting line-up. In one game the Shockers were held to nine points. NO ULRICH ON WEST TEAM The final selections on the West team which will play the East at New Orleans Jan. 3 have been announced. And there is no listing of Hub Ulrich. The fourth end to supplement the selection of Kutner of Texas, Stanton of Arizona, and Gentry of Washington State is Earl Younglove of Washington. ington. It doesn't do any good to second-guess the selections at this time. And yet it does seem rather strange how certain man made the grade. Vike Francis of Nebraska had what was probably his worst season of football this year and yet his coach, Major "Biff" Jones, saw fit to select him. And the final selection of Younglove at end. He rated at the very best the fifth ranking end on the West Coast. The Washington State pair of Nick Suscoff and Dale Gentry, Al Beals of Santa Clara, and Fred Meyer of Stanford, all were given the nod of Younglove by the coast experts. But the best end in the Missouri Valley couldn't even rise to this level, according to Jones and Co. Younglove's selection also made the third member of the Washington team to make the West squad, the most that any school was given. Three members of Minnesota's team were also selected by the East coaches but Washington was certainly no Minnesota this year. Washington was certainly no Missouri. So hat's off to "Biff" Jones, a man with nerve enough to overlook the best end in his section and yet take one of his own backfield men of mediocre ability over such players as Lyden and Martin of Texas. The Army can well use men of your ability in these times, Biff. Forrest C. "Phog" Allen's Jayhawk basketball team opens its road season tomorrow night at Newton with two games against Bethel College's quintets, a squad coached by one of "Phog's" former players, Otto D. Unruh. 19 Players Make Trip To Newton Bethel's probable starting line-up will consist of two freshmen, Harold Balzer and Irvin Schroeder, at forwards; a junior, Melbourne Stukey, at center; and a senior, Roy Bartel, and sophomore, Earl Bartel, 'at guards. Against the veteran Kansas team Unruh will start an inexperienced team in Bethel's first game of the season. The game will dedicate Bethel College's new Memorial Hall. Six Foot Four Center Balzer was high scorer for two seasons at Lehigh High School. Schroeder played on the twice state class B champion quintet at Buhler and was all state class B forward in 1940. Stukey, standing 6 feet 4 inches, is the tallest man on the starting line-up. His home is Moundridge. Roy Bartel from Hillsboro was twice chosen all-Kansas conference fullback but has little experience on the court. Earl Bartel of Lehigh was substitute guard last season. His ball handling and basket-eye have won him a first team berth this year. On the squad's second five are four sophomores from Moundridge —Lloyd Goering, Harlan Goering, Harvey Goering, and Reed Kaufman. The reserve team's center is Andy Kippenstein, Henderson, Neb. A "B" Game Also Preceding the varsity game at Newton will be a "B" team game between the two schools. Allen is taking his entire squad of 19 players to Newton and will use all of them. Several of the players that participate in the "B" game will probably see action in the "A" game also. Members of the squad making the trip will be Ralph Miller, Vance Hall, Charlie Walker, T. P. Hunter, Marvin Sollenberger, John Buescher, Ray Evans, Don Ettinger, Charlie Black, Paul Turner, Jack Ballard, Max Kissell, Bob Fitzpatrick, George Dick, Hub Ul- (continued to page five) Women's Intramurals By Nancy Prather --- The Theta's completely outclassed the Alpha Chi's last night by winning the basketball game, 30 to 16. Peggy Davis and Peggy Roberts hit the basket from every angle during the first half for the Theta's and Eileen Miller made good nearly every shot she tried. The score at the half was 18-4. Theta, and even though the Alpha Chi's received a number of chances at running up their score by free throws they couldn't come close to the Theta score. Watkins Hall defeated the Chi Omega's 13-2. Even though the score makes the game extremely onesided, it wasn't. The Chi Omega's played well but their shots didn't connect. The ball rolled around the rim of the basket and then dropped on the outside. Margaret Kreider and Charlene Baker played outstanding games for Chi Omega. Watkins Hall has one of the strongest basketball teams. Most of its strength is shown by Althea Shuss, forward, and Justine Peterson, guard who were both playing excellent games last night. Peggy Davis, Kappa Alpha Theta, won the women's intramural handball tournament and is the new women's intramural champion. Miss Hoover has announced that the time limit for the first round of aerial darts has been extended to this Friday. The second round time limit will be set after Christmas vacation. MISSOURI MAKES CHANGE Coach Don Faurot of Missouri today shifted Marshall Shurnas from right to left end to replace Art Santow, regular sophomore end who is ill with pneumonia. Officials said it would be impossible for Santow to go to the Sugar Bowl.
