SUNDAY, DECEMBER 14, 1941 UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS PAGE SEVEN County Clubs Get Photos of Campus Eight new photos of buildings on the campus have been taken and prints of them for use in county club displays are now available in the Alumni office. The shots are: Snow hall; Chancellor's residence; Blake hall; Green hall; Robinson Gymnasium, Snow hall in distance; Marvin hall; Winter on Mt. Oread, a shot taken near Fowler shops; and Fraser hall. Also available in the Alumni office for use by the county club organizations are picture booklets of K. U., song cards, and other material suitable for window display and distribution to high school students. Miss Marjorie Whitney, chairman of the department of design, today disclosed plans for the first "Big Six Art Show." This exhibition, according to present plans, will be held in the spring in the Memorial Union building. The Alumni office has some prepared window displays but a large majority of the county clubs will make their own by using K-sweaters, books written by K. U. professors, colored displays of the University, and various publications. Miss Whitney Plans Big Six Art Show For Next Spring Each of the schools of the Big Six have been asked to send 10 exhibits of that school's fine arts school or department to be used in the display. Denver Comes— The line-up which started against Creighton Thursday night saw letterman Dick Barger, six foot four inch senior, pace his mates in scoring with two field goals and two free throws. At the other forward was six feet two inch Jacobs. Two Men Under Six Feet The starting center was Earl Campbell, six foot three inch sophomore. He alternated with Dick Murray, six foot three and one-half inch letterman, who scored three points in the game. At guards were Bobby Wilson, smallest man in the opening line-up at five feet ten inches, and Leonard "Chink" Alterman, six foot one and one-half inch sophomore. Gregg Browning, six foot one inch junior letterman, split the playing time with Alterman. Other members of the traveling squad who will see service here are sophomores Loren Hays, six foot two inch guard or forward; Jerry Otto, five foot eight and onehalf inch forward; and Bernard Woody, six foot forward-guard. Navy Dispels— (continued from page six) marines fought Spanish pirates in the West Indies, natives and pirates in Sumatra, and Seminoles in the Florida Everglades. During the Mexican war, the marines compiled a brilliant record, taking part in the conquest of California, and serving in Mexico under Generals Scott, Taylor, and Worth. Marines fought at Monterrey, Tampico, and Vera Cruz, and were the first American troops to enter the Grand Plaza of the City of Mexico. Two majors of the corps were selected to lead a force of picked men which successfully stormed the Castle of Chapultepec. From the Mexican campaign comes the opening phrase of the famous "Marine Hymn" which begins, "From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli." In 1852-53 marines accompanied Com. Perry to Japan. Ten years later during the Civil War marines assisted in operations on the lower Mississippi and participated in the battle of Mobile Bay and in 1863 the marines waged a campaign in Japan to open up Japan to the western world. In 1869-70 marines were part of the Formosa expedition against the savages and in the next year they fought in Korea. A single battalion of marines occupied Guantanamo, Cuba during the Spanish American war. In the years before the first World War, marines saw action at Tientsin and Pekin, China, during the Boxer rebellion and in Nicaragua, Haiti, and Santo Domingo during revolutions in those countries. The most famous battle in which the marines ever took part was the battle of Belleau Wood in June 1918 when the Fourth Brigade of the Second American division, made up of Fight at Belleau Wood WANT ADS FOR SALE: Full dress suit, size 38. 9181⁵ Massachusetts Street. Williams Meat Co. 20 Kansas Ave., Kansas City the Fifth and Sixth regiments and the sixth machine gun battalion of the Marine Corps moved up to the front to support the sagging French battle line. The marines stopped the German advance with rifle, machine gun, and artillery fire, and then began an advance on Belleau Wood, capture of which was necessary to make an attack on Chateau-Thierry possible. Belleau Wood then became the scene of continuous attacks and counter-attacks as each side attempted desperately to advance. By the 28th of June, the last machine gun nests had been weeded out and the way was open for an attack on Chateau-Thierry. Haven't Fought Lately In the years since the first World War, marines were stationed in Nicaragua and Haiti but in 1933 and 1934 they were withdrawn to the continental United States. In 1941, after 166 years of participation in uncounted wars, revolutions, and native uprisings, the marines are in action again, this time against the Japanese whom they have fought and beaten before in Commodore Perry's time. As often in the past, they fight outnumbered, and cut off from their base of supplies and the rest of our forces, but like always in the past, the United States marines will win again.
