FRIDAY, DECEMBER 12, 1941. UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN; LAWRENCE, KANSAS PAGE FIVE Kansas State Will Rank As One Of Favorites 'Smilin Jack' Gardner Has 5 Vets (This is the fifth of a series of articles appearing in the University Daily Kansan dealing with Big Six basketball prospects.) Kansas State has already lost one man to national defense, for Tom Guy, 6 foot, 1 inch letterman center upon whom Coach Jack Gardner was depending to fill the pivot post this season has been claimed by the air corps. Other lettermen who will be missed by the Wildcats are Chris Langvardt, Norris Holstorm, and Kenneth Graham, all of whom won two K's in the cage sport and have been lost through graduation. Coach Gardner finds himself with a 17-man squad consisting of six returning members of last year's squad and 11 sophomores. His main worry is finding a center to take the place of Tom Guy, and getting his inexperienced team into playing form before, the opening of Big Six conference play. Jan. 6, with Nebraska. Howe Looks Best Probable center candidates are Dean Lill, former letterman at a forward position, who is a good rebound man although pretty short compared to other Big Six centers; and Dan Howe, 6 foot, 3 inch candidate who played just enough to win a letter last winter but who seems to have the inside track at present. Best looking sophomore pivot men are Marlo Dirks, who won eight letters in high school, and Bill Engelland, winner of nine high school letters. Sophomore Holman a Regular Only experienced forward returning this fall is Jack Horacek who led Kansas State in conference scoring last year. Horacek fractured a leg in a softball game last spring, and may be slow getting started this year. But Coach Gardner considers him one of the coolest boys he has ever tutored, and will be depending upon him much this winter. Forward candidates up from last year's freshman team are Fred Kohl, star from Paseo of Kansas City, Mo., and Bruce Holman, fast, aggressive boy from Powhattan, who Track Team Gains Help From Sophs To augment lettermen forming this season's track team, Coach W. H. "Bill" Hargiss is counting heavily on sophomores from last year's yearling squad, and varsity men who didn't letter last year. Numeralmen trying for berths on the varsity squad are Dayton Sharpe, hurdler; Kenny Winters, dash man; Leslie Breidenthal, weight man; Matt Heuertz, discus; Wayne Leonard and Gaylord Conzelman, distance runners. Warren Hodges and Jack Tenenbaum, both sophomore football tackles, are expected to strengthen the squad in weight events. Men who gained experience with last year's team but didn't letter are Don Welty, Oliver Hess, and Russel Mount, all distance runners; and John Wells and Alan Houghton, both pole vaulters. JACK HORACEK Kansas State College may win a berth on the starting lineup. The guard position is the only one at which Gardner has abundant material with which to work. Larry Beaumont and George Mendenhall, two lettermen from last season, will probably get the starting call, while sophomores John Bortka, Kenneth Messner, Max Roberts, and John St. John are gunning for top positions. Three Wins in a Row. Three Wins in a Row The Wildcats started off the season with a 57 to 43 win over Doane College early this month. But the game was a ragged one, despite the decisive score. Women's Intramurals By Nancy Prather Necklaces - Bracelets - Earrings $1.00, $2.50, $5.00 up to $15.00 COLLEGE JEWELER IWW showed more power than any basketball team to date by beating ETC 27 to 13 last night. Lavonne Jacobson scored 14 points for IWW. Marge Rader and Evelyn Harriman also played good games. ETC scored only 2 points the first half while the IWW's score read 16. The IWW team will be a threat to all other intramural teams. Kappa Kappa Gamma defeated Delta Gamma 17 to 8 in an interesting but one-sided game. Lo Smith did most of the scoring for the Kappas and Shirley Irwin exhibited some of the best guarding that has been seen in women's intramurals. In another one-sided game Corbin Hall won from Gamma Phi Beta 19 to 10. At the half the score was 10-7 Corbin, but Margaret Wells scored 5 points in the second half to push Corbin well in the lead. Marynell Dyatt did nearly all the scoring for Gamma Phi while Barbara Koch and Doris Twente held down the guard positions. Alta Bingham and Phyllis Struble did the guarding for Corbin Hall. IND was victorious over TNT 25 to 14. Kathryn Schaake and Rella Henderson received the scoring honors for IND by making all the points between them. Dorothy Smith led the TNT's but the strength of the IND team was too much for TNT to overcome. Hey — Don't Wait — Until It's Too Late.---- Get "his" gift NOW.
