941. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 11, 1941. UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS PAGE FIVE Johnson Sprains Ankle, Reduces Jayhawk Hopes One of the early blows to the Jayhawker title hopes came last night in practice when Bob Johnson suffered a severe sprain of his right ankle. Johnson, driving in for a set-up, leaped for the basket. When he came down he had his foot twisted beneath him. He was carried down to the dressing room where he became unconscious from the pain. He was taken immediately to Watkins Memorial Hospital. An X-ray this morning proved that the ankle was not broken but a severe sprain had resulted. Dr. R. I. Canuteson reported this afternoon that Johnson's "condition is good." It is extremely doubtful if Johnson will be able to play in next week's two games. He should, however, be able to return to the court in time for the Oklahoma game. Jan, 6 here. Johnson was one of the six players that were to go to Dodge City Johnson was one of the six players that were to go to Dodge City tomorrow to help Coach Allen connect his basketball clinic for 31 high schools of Southwest Kansas. In his place, Jack Ballard will go. Another replacement for the clinic-conducting group was needed when word was received of the death of Ralph Miller's grandmother, Max Kissell was selected to replace Miller for the trip. A "Packing-house Crew" Coach Allen and Harold Ingham, director of the extension division, left this morning for the clinic which started at one o'clock this afternoon. The six players will leave tomorrow morning and the entire group will return Saturday afternoon. In scrimimage last night, Allen used what he called his "Packing-house Crew." This consisted of Miller and Ballard at forwards, Evans at center, and Black and Ulrich at guards. A possible replacement for this line-up would be the insertion of Ettinger at guard and moving Black up to Ballard's position. Hall and Buescher Hot Allen says this is the first big team he has been able to place on the floor since 1923. One member of that team, Adolph Rupp, is present coach of the University of Kentucky Wildcats. "Phog" intends to use this team to soften his opponents up and then insert his faster, more agile players. On the White team which opposed his red "Packing-house Crew" were Hunter, Walker, Hall, Sollenberger, and Buescher. They didn't get softened up for they whipped through five straight scrimmage sessions without a loss. Hall and Buescher were the hot-shots. Hall snagged six baskets and two free-throws while the "Thinman" swished through five buckets. Hunter connected for three baskets and Solly got two. Ulrich led the Reds with three goals. Manhattan, Kans., Dec. 11 — (UP) — Bruce Holman, sophomore forward, scored 17 points last night to lead his Kansas State teammates to a 30 to 25 victory over Colorado State in a basketball game. The two teams will meet again tonight. 'Conference's Tallest Team' Rates Respect From Other Five Schools Taking over the distinction enjoyed by Nebraska last year of being "the conference's tallest team," Oklahoma moves into the present basketball campaign with hopes high. Losses by graduation and to the Service were severe, but nevertheless Coach Bruce Drake has a team that must be reckoned with. Winfield's pride and joy, Gerald Tucker, makes his varsity debut this winter and Sooners fans are counting on Tucker to be a real standout. Tucker is Rehounder Tucker, 6 feet $4 \frac{1}{2}$ inches tall and weighing 200 pounds, was all-state center his last two years at Winfield High School. He was a scoring demon there and an outstanding rebound man. Tucker and a number of other fine sophomores have their work out for them in attempting to make up for the loss of Hugh Ford, big center, by graduation, and Garnett Corbin and Allie Paine to the Service. All three were regulars. Track Schedule Released Today The Jayhawk track squad will open its indoor season against Kansas State here Feb. 14, Coach W. H. "Bill" Hargiss announced today. When "Ug" is hot, he is virtually unguardable. The Oklahoma City boy is a junior, as is Heep. Rousey, a former all-state man at Springfield, Ill., will be in the thick of the battle for the guard post left vacant by the loss of Allie Paine. Rousey, 6 feet 1, and Jim Marteney, 5 feet 11. Most likely looking members of the sophomore crop, in addition to Tucker, appear to be forwards Bob McCurdy, 6 feet, and Jack Gray, 5 feet 9, and center Richard Reich, 6 feet 2 inches tall. McCurdy hails from Purcell, while Gray is a product of Norman High School. Reich, like Roberts, is a graduate of Central High School in Oklahoma City, the alma mater of T. P. Hunter of the Jayhawks. Other sophomores who have shown promise include, Don Jones, 6 foot 2 inch guard, Richard Vaughan, 6 foot $ _{2/2} $ inch center, "Bus" West, 5 foot $ _{81/2} $ inch guard, and Fred McKenzie, 5 feet 11 inch guard. Opening game of the season for Oklahoma puts the Sooners up against Southern Methodist at Norman, Saturday night. The Oklahomaans recently added a game with DePaul at Chicago to their original schedule, and a game with Scranton University at Scranton was cancelled. Fordham Football Other lettermen on the Sooner squad are two forwards, Mitch Simon, 5 feet 9, and Warren Lehman, 6 feet, and a pair of guards, Tom New York, Dec. 11 — (UP)— The Fordham football squad was at full strength yesterday for the first time since the N.Y.U. game and Conch Jimmy Crowley gave the Rams six new plays for use against Missouri in the Sugar Bowl game Jan. 1. But all were on hand yesterday with Ritinski taking part in a long passing drill with fullback Steve Filipowicz.
