University Daily Kansan / Thursday, October 6, 1988 Sports 13 Despite 2 injured ankles, safety will play Saturday By Jeff Eston Kanean sportswriter Kansan sportswriter Last week against New Mexico Last, free safety Dong Terry played defensively and was dominant a day's game against Nebraska. Terry again will be competed injured "They're starting to feel pretty good," said Terry, a Liberal freshman. "I'll be ready for Saturday." Terry practiced yesterday with both ankles heavily tapped, but he is not back to full speed. Once after play the opponent had a severe-headed-ready injured ankle for a second time. "Then I hurt the one that wasn't hurt before," he said. "So it was kind of a harm deal." "My left one is doing really well, it's pretty close to full strength. But my right ankle is a lot more tender than the other one." Kansas coach Glen Mason also said Terry should be ready for the Nebrask game. "He'll play." Mason said. "The thing about it is that it's Wednesday. He's got a couple of days to go light from on here out." "I never really thought about it," he said. "I just play week after week and don't really think about statistics or anything." Terry, who has claimed the starting role at free safety as a true freshman, is third in the Big Eight conference in tackles with 47 but he is not concentrating on personal goals. Despite his success, Terry has noticed a difference in the caliber of players at the college level. "It a lot tougher here," he said. "Everyone's a lot bigger. I'm only 158 pounds, and going up against 250 pound pulling guards every week starts to take it it's toll. It's always a challenge." Last week, Terry, slowed by the first ankle injury, had one of his best games of the season. He made seven unassisted tackles and assisted on four others. The performance was to his six十四 game at Auburn. Terry said his injured ankles would affect his play this weekend. "I won't be slow, but I'll be a little slower than usual," he said. "But not so slow that I won't be able to hold it." It'll be a little harder this week. Nebraska," he said. "As for me, I love the atmosphere of the game because we have nothing to lose. If not every day you get to play a team like Nebraska, so I just look at it as a big challenge for our and our team. We are very difficult to lose, so we just have to go out and compete to the best of our abilities." But the prospect of playing ninth-ranked Nebraska will be added incentive for Terry. "I think it's a privilege to play a team that's been as highly ranked as Nebraska's powerful running game won't change the Jayhawks approach on defense, Terry said. Freshman defensive back Doug Terry is third in the Big Eight Conference in tackles with 47 this season. Terry will be starting Saturday against Nebraska despite his two twisted ankles. "We'll basically do the same thing we've been doing," he said. "It's not really that it's easier to defend, but it helps." He added that I like playing against the best. "I'd rather come up and hit some one on the run than get an intercep tion on pass coverage." Though Terry will be playing Saturday, two other defensive starters will miss the game. Redshirt freshman Lance Fluchs barb probably will be out for the rest of the season with a knee injury, Mason said. "They did the arthroscopic surgery and it wasn't as bad as they thought," he said. "That's the good stuff." He still 'properly done for the year." Besides Flachsbarth, the Jayhawks also will be without starting outside linebacker Paul Friday. "It's a hip flexor," Mason said of Friday's injury. "It's not a serious thing, but it takes time to heal." Filling the gaps at outside line backer will be freshmen Jasor Tyer, Kenny Rappold and Tom Barrett and John Drew Main and Dan Newbrough, who was switched from tight end to linebacker this Vaughn may be able play, despite earlier reports that he would not because of a sore knee. "I think he's going to try to play," Mason said. "If he's not really moving well. 'I'm not going to play him." On offense, wide receiver Willie OSU tailback's speed is turning heads STILLWATER, Okla. Barry Sanders of Oklahoma State sniffed a glimpse of his experience during the past two years. "You knew you were looking at a very talented athlete when he first came here. As a freshman, we saw him on the field with the kick returns, we got a better idea of how that he really is." Sanders has done that 11 times this year, including five in last week's 56-35 victory over Tulsa when he ran for the Cincinnati Bengals. Thomas record of 294 yards. But Jones said there's still much to find out about Sanders. "He takes your breath away," Jones said, "because you think he's going to score every play. (Tony) Dorsett was that way." "There are situations he has not in, which only time will tell." Jones said. "He has to win the game in injury. He has to win the game. I would have to have to win the game." That, too,霉霉 within reach. rank Thurman as the best I've ever coached. He did it over a four-year period. Now, if someone asked who explosive is he, I say Barry Sanders. Sanders started the year with the 100-yard kickoff return against Miami of Ohio. He had started off his sophomore year the same way, but an 10-yard run later in the first half gave Sanders a Gandey like Gandy into Sanders's biggest fan. Sanders has been named Big Eight Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the first three weeks. He has continued his kick returning duties despite carrying the full load at tailback. He averages 399 all-purpose yards a game, tops in the league. The stretch of the legs on Sanders' stocky physique came from hopping around and running back at Northwestern University Bryan last year with a new jersey. Sanders was the No. 4 tailback as a freshman, but Jones said he couldn't afford to redshirt him, in part for injuries and his talent for kick returns. "I can't really tell you. I envisioned it, but I don't feel like setting goals. I don't feel like an athlete should ever feel satisfied. The only positive feedback, really, is win "I guess I'm built low to the ground," Sanders said. "Me and my brother used to run a lot of stairs. He was more of an adultter than I was. I was more of an adultter than it would turn around like it did." Sanders, the sixth of 11 children, is quiet and unassuming. On Friday and Saturday nights, he prefers to stay in the dorm room and "just take it easer." It's kind of rewarding to be by yourself," he said. "But not I am yourself." You can't think to myself, What makes me so good?" That isn't one of the things I like. Jones was cautious about his past, but he followed his hostess rushing pursuit of Tula, fearing the "glowing things" she said he about him would be distractive. "He's such a nice person," Jones said. "How long before he gets calls to the kind of stuff... most of us have that as a legitimate, nice person," thought. Hopes of a Heisman Trophy have not escaped Jones or Oklahoma State publishes Steve Buzzard, who has been the coach of Sanders for early next week, before the Cowboy plays Nebraks. Ironically, a similar promotional package was released on Thomas prior to the team's game against Thomas. Thomas gained only seven vards. MANNING REMAINS UNSIGNED: Sports Briefs Ron Grinker said Tuesday that the former Kansas forward had not signed a contract yet because of a dispute over salary. The agent for Danny Manning, the NBA's top draft offering this year and an Olympic competitor on the U.S. basketball team, said his client would not show up at the dancers'ippers' training camp tomorrow. "It's not a matter of a few thousand or a few hundred thousand dollars." Grinker said. "We probably millions apart are fighting because that means one of us is dramatically incorrect." Grinker reportedly was asking for $8 million over the next four years and the Clippers apparently were offering $6 million. "We will sign Manning," said two owners of the Nike franchise, who on unusual move were handling negotiations for the NBA club on the Manning deal "I don't want to change it." Other Clippers still insigned include Charles Smith, who also was on the U.S. Olympic team, and free agent guard Quintin Dalley. Oakland again showed off its pitching and power, and took a lead Game Two tonight, with Storm Dame against Boston's Roger Clemens. The Mets first baseman hit a two-run homer in the fourth and finished Belcher with a run-scoring double. In six regular season games at Dedger Stadium against New York, Los Angeles scored a total of six runs and never more than two. The Dodgers then went out and showed Cone why they deserved some. It was Cone's shortest outing as a starter this season. On July 26, he allowed four runs in 3 % innings against Philadelphia. Mickey Hatcher walked with one out in the first and moved to second on a balk. During the season, Cone had a club-hub 10 balks. Cone, who won his last eight decisions, hit Jeff Hamilton with a pitch one out in the second. In 231 1-1 innings, Cone bit only four batters. After an intentional walk to Kirk Gibson, Marshall singled in Hatcher for the fourth run of the inning. Cone was batted for in the top of the third and was relieved by Rick Aguera. Cone made his first seven appearance this season as a captain during the startling rotation when Aguiera was sidelined with an elbow injury. The Mets, limited to one hit in the first three innings, scored in the fourth when Gregg筋练 wailed knees and Hankymonk honored right center field.
