THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 29, 1940 UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS PAGE SEVEN On the Shin By BUXTON, MEININGER To solve transportation problems arising from the fact that the annual law party is being held at the Country Club Friday night some of the lawyers have been dickering for a Rapid Transit bus at 30 cents a couple. Henshall says it ain't the dash going over, it's the drag coming back. Charlie Henshall, never one to condone half-way measures, is said to be making arrangements for a Grey-hound sleeper for the half-mile trip. Henshall says it ain't the dash going. Congratulations to he who instigated the checking of activity books at the mid-week. After the influx of high school kids last week something had to be dee. It was getting so you couldn't tell whether the Beta pledge class got out for a night or not. It happens to somebody every year. "Doc" Lee from the Delt house made a date with Kappa Dollie Newlon for Feb. 31. Here's a little gem that came out of a debate tour. Emmett Park was speaking in Russell last week and, knowing that Bunky Banker lives there, mentioned that he knew a good story about Banker. He said, he wouldn't tell it since Bunky's mother might be in the audience. The payoff came two days later when Banker got a letter from his mother complaining that she didn't know just what he had been up to, but she knew that he had been disobeying her. Howard Harris at the Kappa Sig house looked pretty silly last Tuesday when he called Mary Francis Nelson and thought she said that he had been out with a guy named Slet from San Francisco. Diathermy equipment is well known for its use in administering heat to injured tissue. The Hight machine prevents the danger of burning because it uses both a rheostat for control of the electric motor, and a thermostat for control of the heat generated. The thermostat is applied as part of the injury wrapping, and receives the same temperature as does the injured part itself. When the machine has been turned off, the rubber tubing and towel-like wrappings will hold heat for an hour or more. Any Part of Body The rubber tubings which carry the heated water in the Hight device are affixed together by means of brass fittings, which may be removed and used to adjust the size of the applicator for any size injury or any portion of the human body. Another important factor of the adjustable tubing. Hight explained to his hearers, is that because of its peculiar construction, it can be valuably used for either area massage or for focal (point) massage. He illustrated this by wrapping several sections of the tubing about his hand, and applying pressure in two different ways to produce the two different types of massage. No Burning In his demonstration, Hight used Ray Harris, ed 40, member of the University track team, as a subject. Commented Harris, "The invention works just like diathermy, but is much more effective, and there is no danger of burning." Both Harris and Hight mentioned other University athletes who have had treatment by Hight, with the Injury Device. In each case, the machine was immensely successful, explained its inventor. The machine Hight used in his demonstration, and which he is patienting, is the seventh he has built. He started out some time ago, experimenting with different processes and materials, and soon hit upon the idea of using adjustable tubing and brass fittings for the application of heated water. His present machine allows the use of cold water if so desired. Each machine Hight built was an improvement on the one before, until he now believes he has reached the final stage. His machine is portable, being compactly built into a case closely resembling an overnight case. All tubing, wrappings, and other equipment can easily be packed into the case, which has an inner lid with an indicator light, and carried from place to place. Its portability will place it in demand for road trips by athletic teams. Henry Helps dred dollars, and may be even more expensive, depending upon the equipment. At the present rate, its inventor can produce the machines at a rate of six a day, building them himself. Hight said he had received much help in his work from interested friends, as well as support and direction from Gwinn Henry, athletic director, and the other coaches. Hight hopes to demonstrate his invention before the Big Six coaches at the Kansas Relays, April 20. Hight continued to stress the value of his invention to the small institution. "Too often," he maintained, "the smaller school can not afford more expensive equipment, even though it may need it. Thus it runs the danger of failing to treat an injury which may become very serious. I hope my invention can end all this." Delta Sigma— Although Hight believes his device will sell easily, he is not primarily interested in realizing profit from it, he said. The machine can be retailed, he pointed out, for from 25 to 50 dollars. This is a great reduction from the cost of diathermy equipment, which the Hight machine hopes to replace.
