WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 1940 UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS PAGE SEVEN On the Shin By BUXTON, MEININGER Glen McCann, senior law completing his seventh year on the Hill, attended the Pi Phi tea in honor of the visiting national president last Sunday. After McCann had made the greeting rounds he retired to a corner with his tea and cookie. The guest of honor noticed him and asked one of her hosts, "Who's that nice looking, silly boy. Is he a freshman here this year?" Time offers the following encouraging statement, attributing it to a select club at Harvard. "The gentlemen's grades are considered to be three 'Cs' and a 'D'." The dean can have his honor roll. We're in the blue book. Downtown clothiers report a heavy sale of single breasted suits for new initiates, guaranteed to swing well on the left side to show shiny new fraternity pins. Eddie, Negro bottle washer and utility man at Hal's Inn, was telling a waiter about seeing something that looked like a ghost. The waiter asked Eddy if he believed in ghosts. "Naw," replied Eddy, "but people who act like ghosts ain't out for no good." We must be just plumb dumb and dramalergic for we can't see any visions of a junior OGPU back of Andy "Let Freedom Ring" Hibbard's sudden withdrawal of his petitions. Rewrite the third act, Andy. Ed Browne, Kansan business manager whose first name is Roy, received a letter yesterday from Iowa State University containing a telegram addressed to a Roy Brown. It read: Dear Boy I must have money immediately. In eyes of law you must support me. This takes at least $100 per month. If you fail I shall start legal action soon after you are paid. Is it your plan that we separate permanently? Please let me know. Sincerely, Blank. Nettled by countless "nixes" from Alpha Chi Ruth Linck who is pinfetered by Ed Carr, late of the Campus, Kappa Sig Sammy Lowe girded up his loins and started toward the AC house to give Miss Linck a surprise buzz and take her to the show before she knew what was up—sort of a "blitzkrieg" courting so to speak. Unfortunately Sammy's loins became ungarded at Brick's; he called the fair maiden up to warn her of his coming. She warned him to stay away and that was the end of un-American courting on the Hill. To Katy Sewell from Miller Cameron: one dozen red roses. What did they indicate? Congratulations upon initiation or the end of a beautiful but battered romance? She called him Mister Cameron on the Campus the other day and she wasn't initiated. From Phi Gam Herb Lodge to Patti Payne on Valentine's day, two dozen roses. From fiance Joe Elmore to Miss Payne: nothing. Take your pick; rumor doesn't "have" anything. IT PAYS TO ADVERTISE!!! All Shows—15c—Anytime NOW ENDS FRIDAY 2 — SWELL HITS — 2 It Sizzles! I Burns! Eliot Writing Major George Fielding Eliot, who will speak here tomorrow night on "How Safe We Are From Attack," began his literary career as a pulp magazine author, and his military career as an under-aged young American in the British Army in 1915. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1896, Eliot moved with his family to Australia at the age of eight, and was attending college in Melbourne when the World War broke out. He enlisted as a second lieutenant in the British army at 19. He fought for four months in the Dardanelles and then was moved to the Western Front, where he saw active service in the battles of Somme, Passchendaele, Aires, and Armentieres. After the war, the United States government graciously forgave him for transgressing over into the British Army on the grounds that he was not of age, and made him a Reserve Officer at home. He advanced to a position in the Military Intelligence Service. He first began to write in 1926 when he read a pulp magazine entitled "War Stories" and decided he could do better. He could.
