PAGE FOUR SPORTS UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 1940 Bring On The Tigers Simonizing SportS By JAY SIMON Orv Mathews, the Oklahoma Rocket who is back in school after laying out five, is working out with the track squad and is rapidly regaining the old form that made him the fastest thing off skates when a Sooner high school boy . . . As a senior at the 1934 state interscholastic meet he scored 15 points in the dashes, running the century in 9.6, the furlong in 21.2 and the quarter in 49.6 . . Gentlemen, that's really scampering . . Kansas swimmers don't hold a single one of their eight pool records . . . Washington of St. Louis and Iowa State each have three and Nebraska and Kansas State have one apiece . . The baseball team has 14 letterterm returning this year, but no coach . . However, this situation will be remedied Friday evening when the Athletic boards meet, and it is our very personal hunch that "Dutch" Erhllaub will be along third base line when Jayhawk hitters are taking their cuts this spring . . Elon Torrence, former Kansan sports editor now with the Garden City Telegram, plans to make the long trek when be here Friday night for Missouri vs. Kansas. Prior to the Missouri dual meet, the A.P. carried a story saying the Bengals' Higgins would be unable to vault in the meet . . . All he did was go 13 feet and take first place . . . Oklahoma's track team will get its only competition before the Big Six indoor this Saturday night at Lincoln in a two-way argument with the Huskers . . . When Mathews and "Red" Littler hook up the cinders will really fly. Lyman Corlis, last year's basketball captain, has been sparking the Haynes Hardware quintet of Emporia this season and scoring around 15 points a game . . . Former Emporia Teachers stars make up the remainder of the team . . . Thursday night E. C. Quigley will dedicate his "You Can't Do That" radio program to the Kansas Jayhawkers . . . The program is at 9:30 over WIBW. Topeka . . . Ernie would be glad to have any suggestions on the program and will pay $1 to anyone who submits a question that he uses on his program. On Wednesday nights, Mr. Quigley asks a question and $3 is paid for the first correct answer sent in. Home Ec Classes Hear Boston Woman Problems and needs of the family today were discussed by Mrs. Gladys Beckett Jones, president of the Garland School of Boston, when she addressed the combined home economics classes at 10:30 and 1:30 today. Back from a successful two-game road trip, the Jayhawker basketball squad is rarin' to go after the league-leading Missouri Tigers in the championship game here Friday night. Baseball Coach Will Be Named Friday Night Baseball players are dusting out their uniforms and sharpening the cleats for another season, but as yet they have no coach. Ralph Conger, last year's baseball mentor, is now at Wentworth Military Academy and this spring's coach will not be elected until the Athletic board meets Friday night. Only five lettermen were lost from last year's squad and 12 will be on hand when the first practice sessions get underway about March 15. Clifford Brass, Paul Holcum, and Lester Kappleman have either graduated or used up their three years of competition and Frank Bukaty and Ed Hall are not eligible for athletics this semester. Three returning pitchers, Ralph Dugan, Jack Sands, and John Burge, should give the Jayhawkers some dependable work from the mound. Allen said, "It looks like a long, cold trip to Siberia, but we'll do our best." It might have been cold, but the weather didn't seem to affect Ralph Miller, Kansas forward, who suddenly became red hot to score 20 points against Nebraska and 19 against Iowa State, and lead the Jayhawks to the double victory. Kansas downed Nebraska, 48 to 14, Saturday and last night whipped Iowa State, 42 to 29, to come within a half game of the Tigers. The Jayhawks rushed ahead to a 20 to 14 lead at the intermission, then came back to make it a rout in the last period. Most of the Kansans were scoring from way out, but Miller was bagging his 8 buckets on drive-in shots. Miller is now only two points behind Jimmy McNatt in the race for individual scoring honors in the conference. He has 102 points in 8 games and Oklahoma Jimmy has 104. McNatt has to play against the Cyclones Saturday night at Ames and Ralph has to face Missouri, before they hook up in the season's finale, March 8 at Norman. Don Ebling and Dick Harp, senior cagers, cashed in with three buckets each to sid the Jayhawks against Iowa State. Phi Gam's Near Play-Off Berth With 40-20 Win By Clint Kanaga, c'42 Virtually assuring themselves of a playoff berth, Phi Gamma Delta performed like a championship outfit in downing a tough Sigma Nu team, 40 to 20 last night. The Phi Gam's moved into the front from the start, leading at halftime, 24 to 12. Healy and McSpadden were stars in their team's easy win. The Phi Gam's missed nine straight free throws. Colburn, Triangle forward gathered 18 of his team's 19 points but one man wasn't enough as the Kappa Sig's trounced the Triangles 42 to 19. Cameron and Hensley paced the Kappa Sig attack, ringing up 15 and 14 points, respectively. The Comets won their sixth contest in seven starts, defeating Alpha Chi Sigma, 40 to 10. Domingo, Comet scoring ace, led the field in point-making with seven baskets and five charity tosses. (Continued on page five) Spring Drills For Gridmen Start Friday Spring football aspirants watched a motion picture taken of last season's Kansas-Missouri football game in Fraser hall at 4:30 this afternoon. Other outstanding plays of the year were also shown to the assembled gridders. Following the pictures, Coach Gwinn Henry outlined his plans for spring practice. If the weather permits suits will be issued Thursday afternoon and practice will begin at 4:30 p.m. Friday. For the first few days much time will be spent in limbering-up exercises and studying the fundamentals. With most of his men eleigible and in school, Coach Henry is expecting a large turn-out. A new opponent has been added to the Kansas schedule for this season. The Jayhawkers will play Villanova at Philadelphia, and in the two other non-league games Drake and the Colorado Aggies come here to play the second games of two-year contracts. Bill Bunsen, Steve Renko, and Jim Holloway, regulars on the '38 eleven aren't in school this semester, but will be back ready for service next September. Henry predicted today, the three teams to beat this fall in the Big Six will be Nebraska, Missouri, and Oklahoma. He refused to say anything about his own team's chances, preferring to wait until he has looked his men over next week before making any statements. Many vacancies will have to be filled, as 13 men from last year's squad will be lost through graduation and the semester ruling. Two of the most promising freshmen coming up this fall will be Tom Robertson, center from Duncan, Okla., and Don Pololl from Topeka. Henry seemed enthusiastic about these men, and said that several others showed promise also. Kappa's and Pi Phi's Play at 9 O'clock Tonight Kappa Kappa Gamma and Pi Beta Phi will meet in a basketball battle tonight at 9 p.m. The winner will play Corbin hall for championship of the organized houses Thursday. Second round matches of the ping pong and deck tennis tournament must be played off by Thursday, Feb. 29. READ:- Our Leap Year Bargain Sales 'Ad' IN TOMORROW'S KANSAN Better Come Thursday----
