PAGE FOUR SPORTS JNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 1940 Cage and Track Teams On the Road Tomorrow Cornhuskers And Cyclones Face Loopers The Jayhawker basketball team continues its uphill fight for the Big Six basketball championship with a two-game road trip that pits it against Nebraska tomorrow night at Lincoln and Iowa State Monday night at Ames. Kansas has lost only one game in the conference and can still win the flag outright by sweeping its four remaining games. Missouri, the bookies' favorite with eight wins and one loss, has only to meet Kansas here a week from tonight. Tomorrow night's scrap at Lincoln will be the Cornhuskers' final game of the season. At present they are in a virtual three way tie with Iowa State and Kansas State for the cellar. The Huskers have won two and dropped seven. Fitz Back in Lineup Kansas downed Nebraska, 40 to 24, when the teams met here last month, but the Huskers were minus the services of Don Fitz, the star who was supposed to make them dangerous this year. With Fitz back in the lineup, teaming with sophomore Sid Held, Kansas will face a pair of exceptionally fine sentinels. Both are 6 foot 4 and nimble for their size. The Jayhawkers will again call on the scoring of Ralph Miller who is in second place among the loop's basket shooters with a 10:25 average, to pull them through. Ralph should go well against Nebraska as the Huskers play the type of ball that he thrives on. The crack junior forward scores best against a fast-breaking team. Dick Harp, top-notch guard, found his basket eye during the Kansas State game when he bagged four field goals and should be hard to hold down during the rest of the campaign. Harp Finds Basket Eye (Continued on page five) Meet N.U. Tankers Here Tomorrow Afternoon A strong Nebraska swimming team, coached by Dick Hagelin, will meet the Kansas tankers in Robinson gym tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock. The Huskers will be top-heavy favorites and they will also be strong contenders for the Big Six crown this spring, according to the Kansas coach, Jim Raport. If the Kansas squad is defeated Saturday, it will be its third consecutive loss within a week. Urged on by this the local mermen will be going full-blast to stand-off another possible set-back. H. G. Alphin of the physical education department will be the starter and one of the three judges. The other two have yet to be named. Following are the Kansas entries as announced today by Coach Raport: 300-yard medley relay—Cooper, Nelson, and either Joe Morton or Rosebush. 220-yard dash—Tom Walton, Gene Feaster, and LaShelle. 50-yard dash—Wilson, Rosebush, and Art Robinson. Dives—Koehling and Harry Han. 100-yard dash—Morton, Robinson and Wilson. 150-yard back stroke—Cooper and Rosebush. 200-yard back stroke—Nelson. 440 yard swim—LaShelle and Walton. 400-yard relay- Morton, Wilson, Robinson, and Rosebush. 6-Point Rally Downs Comets; Hellhounds Win By Clint Kanaga, c'42 Trailing 20 to 22 with three minutes to play, Kappa Etta Kappa put on a 6-point scoring spurt, to give the Comets their first defeat of the season, 22 to 26. Leaders of the K.E.K. rally were Jackson and Brunton. Brunton gathered two long shots to put his team in front and Jackson clinched the win, scoring on a sleeper. Peterson and Domingo were outstanding for the Comets, while Brunton and McKale starred for the winning side. The Hellhounds nosed out the Theta Tau's in a 3-minute overtime, 29 to 28, last night. Free throws by Anderson and Kurth with 30 seconds remaining seemed to have put the game on ice. Howeyer, Unruh, ace Hellhounds guard, evened the score at 28 all with a long shot from the center of the court. ARROW Missouri, the defending Big Six indoor champion, will be favored to win, but Kansas' most recent showing has encouraged Coach Bill Harggl. The Jayhawks did better than expected in their dual meet with Kansas State. The final event, the mile relay, decided the Jayhawk-Wildcat dual and it was only by inches that Kansas was nosed out for first place in the relay. Consequently, Hargiss is hoping to give the Tigers considerably more competition than they are expecting. Harris Won't Run The Jayhawkers will be without the services of Ray Harris, star distance runner and captain, as Coach Hargiss plans to leave him out of competition this week in order that he will be in shape for the Big Six indoor meet at Kansas City, March 9. Harris ran on an injured leg against Kansas State, but will not compete in the Missouri meet.
