THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 1940. UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS PAGE SEVEN On the Shin By BUXTON, MEININGER= "That was the most uncomfortable hour and a half I have ever spent," bluntly remarked Chancellor Malott to a somewhat surprised H. R. Knickerbocker following the latter's speech. The rigid silence that follows such remarks as this was soon dispelled when the Chancellor explained that the uncomfortableness was due to thoughts of the terrible possibilities raised by "Knick's" speech. Kansan business manager Ed Browne has his office situated in a "smoking permitted" but just to show his belief in the smoking laws he has laid down a ban of his own—and he enforces it. In the event we are enjoying what smoking privileges you now have don't let "the principle of the thing" make you sign a petition that might lead to the repeal of the smoking laws. From what we are able to learn, you can take what privileges you have now or you can take nothing. There won't be a smoking sanctum sanctorium left on the Hill should the present laws be repealed by the students. Don't let these wise-acre politicians work you out of what you have. The strains of "Happy Birthday to You," in commemoration of George Washington, added no end to the merriment in a local cafe this morning. Lots of the customers were singing to George but only those on the inside knew which George they were singing for. "Alone in the moonlight," remarks witty Theta Cecil King, "is more fun if you're not." Call 295, boys. A reporting II student is getting good experience with censorship in trying to get a story on the tunnel on the Brynwood Place. After failing to get anything out of the noncommittal Mr. Bayles, the student disgustedly remarked, "What do these guys think they're digging? The Maginot Line?" Not long ago three boys knocked at a woman's apartment to ask her to play bridge with them. With the door opened only a few inches the woman nervously explained that she was busy making coffee. And whom do you suppose was hiding behind the woman's skirt? Our friend, Ultra Legal Eagle Alan Asher, up there trying to get some news for his column. U. G. Mitchell, professor of mathematics, spoke on "Geometric Configurations" at a meeting of the Mathematics colloquium at 4:30 o'clock this afternoon. Collegiate Shopper With the third week of February flitting by, your sidewalk trotters come through with suggestions from Massachusetts street that should swing you right into spring. Indeed, in portraying Lawrence's main thoroughfare these days, the surrealist would place a new suit, a misty blouse, and a pin-wheel of all that's newest in the same picture. Greene's have swung out in the grand march of spring wear with THE gayest and nattiest of Kay Dunhill dresses at $3.98 to $7.98. It's Greene's too, for new spring woven sweaters. Here's something the folks will appreciate when you send them your picture—the newly introduced antique frames at Hixson's. Rare in their oddity, sweet in their simplicity, the frames can "do things for you." And speaking of what's new, it's Shimmons for the cleverest electric, novelty bulbs we've ever seen. In each there's an embossed replica of a flower or a famous character. They're beautiful and last three times the ordinary bulb. If ever there was a connoisseur's paradise, Drake's Bake Shop is that. We almost stayed the morning gazing at a sea of cakes and cookies. They're good and low priced, too. Comes Spring and a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love—and what greater help is there for making a party evening a success or a day memorable than flowers from Ward's? Individual in style, superior in taste, Ward's flowers rank high. The University Student Christian Federation is sponsoring a series of devotional programs through the Lenten period to March 20, held at 8:00-8:20 each morning in Myers hall.
