I never realized 'til late in the evening that I was really in a spot. I never took it seriously." Discrepancies In Confession When questioned about a discrepancy in his confession, Claflin had this explanation: "Actually I went to bed between 11 and 11:30 that night (Oct. 30) and never woke up 'til they aroused me at about 1 or 1:30 when the fire was discovered." The confession said that he set the fire at about 1 o'clock Oct. 30 and went to bed for half an hour to wait for the fire to be discovered. At one place his confession stated that he was asleep during this time and another contradicted that statement. Questioners Confused Him Questioners Confused Him Claflin was questioned by eight men: John Spaulding, special investigator from Wichita; Peter A. Kelley, Crawford county court reporter; Clyde Latchem, state fire marshall; Tom Rankin, old time Quenemo sheriff called in because of his long record for obtaining confessions; Robert Gray, deputy state fire marshall from Wichita; Jay Sullivan, Lyon county attorney. Police Chief Jude Anderson and Sheriff Charles Banning assisted. "They all questioned me as fast as they could get in words," Claflin said. The 21-year-old youth said that this was the first semester that he had been really intent on going through school. Always before, he said, he had hated to leave his summer job to return to the Hill. "The main thing for me is to finish school now," he said. "I know it'll take a lot of nerve but I want to do it."
