14 Wednesday, October 5, 1988 / University Daily Kansan Johnson vows to be in 1992 Olympics The Associated Press TORONTO — Ben Johnson, stripped of his gold medal in the 100 meter dash in the Olympic Games at Seoul after testing for positive for stearin and yesterday he has never used drunk driving. He will be back in the 1992 Olympic Games. "When I was a kid I never took drugs," said Johnson. He read from a prepared statement at Toronto's Sutton Place Hotel. "People who knew me in Jamaica and people who know me here know I wouldn't take drugs. I have never, ever knownly taken illegal drugs, and I would never embarrass my country and the kids who love me." "My mother taught me that there is only one way to win—and I plan to come back— still a champion and a winner at the next Olympics." Reporters and cameramen have been outside camped on Johnson's home since he returned from Seoul a week ago. He then went back to his home with reporters seeking his comments. In his statement, Johnson, who declined to take questions, asked why they weren't there. "My family and I need some time and space. Please, please grant us that." Johnson was accompanied by his attorney, Ed Futerman. Futerman told the press conference the runner never had given an interview to the West German magazine, Stern, which quoted Johnson as screaming, "It will back you嘿 did this to me." "I think Ben is realistic enough to say, 'I don't know.' He's heard all the evidence — he is confused now," added Fitterman, who said Johnson was "not denying the presence of steroids." We're not sure, we want to find out." Futerman said the investigation should focus on determining if the evidence is consistent. He also said that one "all-embracing, all-conclusive" investigation should be enough rather than separate probes by all the organizations involved. Nevertheless, Futerman did say he was pleased that the Canadian government was conducting its own investigation and said he was looking into appealing to the international Court for assistance and the Canadian Track association. Asked about Johnson's comments in Stern, Futerman said, "I can only tell you that Ben has assured me that he never gave that interview last week." Futerman also denied rumors that Johnson was considering a career in "I know that some sponsors have left him; I know that others have stayed," Futerman said. professional football, but admitted that the controversy had damage' the runner's marketability. With the exception of an interview with the Toronto Sun and the alleged interview with Sienn Johnson has been reported on media since returning from Seoul. Johnson's positive test resulted in his being stripped of the gold medal and of the world record of 9.79 seconds he recorded in the race. He was later to a 6-year suspension by the International Athletic Federation. In the Stern interview, Johnson sporadically said he might need new players when he set the world record of 8.93 in the 1976 World Championships at the Olympics. Stern published the interview with the Canadian spinner in an issue released three days ahead of its normal distribution date. "I'm finished. I will probably never run the 100-meter again," Stern quoted Johnson as saying. Stern said Johnson made the comments during talks with the spinner at his sister's Toronto home Sep. 29. "The Doping Games," the magine headlined its front cover beside photograph of Johnson dashing to the finish line in Seoul with his arm raised, index finger pointed trumpet-wrench and the finger of that photograph was a picture of a large hand injecting a drug into the The talks with Johnson appeared in Stern in German and were translated into English by The Associated Press. According to Stern, Johnson mastected that he did not knowly use chemotherapy and had undergone metal after urine tests showed he had used an ilegal muscle-building Although drug experts concluded that the spinner had been using the steroid over a long period of time, Johnson and his associates said he had been given the drug without his knowledge. Stern said Johnson denied ever having used drugs and reacted angrily to the more mention of it. "I never took呵呵," he said. Stern portrayed Johnson as at times not fully understanding the scandal's financial consequences. "Of course we'll continue building the house for Mom, "Johnson told the magazine when asked about an expensive home he is having built for his mother. But when asked how he answered it, Johnson was silent Stern said. VAUGHN OUT FOR NU: Kansas coach Glen Mason, who has already lost one starter for the team, expects first-team flanker Willie Vaughn to be ready for this game against No. 9 Nebraska. Sports Briefs Vaughn, who accounted for three of Kansas' touchdowns against New Mexico State Saturday, said he and sat out of practice yesterday. "I don't think Vaughn will make it," Mason said. "It's very doubtful." Mason also won't be playing starting outside linebacker Paul Friday, who is suffering from a hip pointer. Friary, who sustained a torn ACL in day-1 practice, was injured play against New Mexico State. Mason earlier announced that starting outside linebacker Lance Flachsbart was bailed for most several weeks and may not return. Flachsbart, who was taken out of Saturday's game because of a knee injury, is scheduled for tests today to examine the exact nature of the injury. Mason said starting tailback Arnold Snell may be able to play this weekend, but he would not be playing at 100 percent. Snell sat out of practice Monday because of a sore knee.
