PAGE FOUR SPORTS UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE; KANSAS WEDNESDAY,FEBRUARY 21,1940 Aggies Bow to Jayhawks Simonizing SportS BY JAY SIMON Notes on the Game Last night's Kansas-Kansas State contest was bitterly fought all the way and much closer than the 44 to 33 score indicated. . . With five minutes remaining, State was still in the ball game, trailing only four points, but Ralph Miller tossed in two field goals and two free throws in the short span of three minutes to put it on ice. . . Kansas was still cold in the shooting department, hitting only 15 of 76, but that was a little better than the poor 15 per cent showing made against Iowa State. . . The Wildcats, battling from the start in their last game of the season, rippled the nets on 12 out of 51 tries. Jack Horacek, sophomore Aggie sensation who led the scoring parade with 16 points, single-handled kept the Wildcats in the running most of the first half . . . The Topeka boy hit four long swishers and one in close to account for State's first 10 points at the end of 10 minutes. . . At the half he had connected on six shots out of 11. Students were converging on the gym fully an hour and a half before game time . . . Among the early arrivals were a group from the Hill including Denny Lemoine, Jean McFarland, Dick Amerine, Burr Sifers, Clint Kanage, Dick Miller, Larry Wynn, and others. . . By seven bells the joint was packed and at 7:15 they were literally hanging from the rafters. . . . About 15 small boys had crawled out on the beams running high above the court to get a better view of the proceedings. The Big Six allows only 10 players of a visiting team to be suited up, so at the hotel before the game T. P. Hunter and Bill Hogben flipped a coin to see which one got to don a uniform. . . . T. P. won. . . Ervin Reid, center who has been so dangerous against Kansas the last two years, was on the sidelines when the Purple came out for its pre-game warm-up. . . But with them was Ernie Miller, star guard who suffered a broken jaw Jan. 1 and hadn't played since. For the first time since he's been in college Ralph Miller went into a basketball game without having his knee taped. . . But after five minutes of play he kicked his dribble, stumbled, and fell down in heap with one of the Aggies. . . His knee went out and Trainer Dean Nesmith had to help him to the dressing room for treatment. . . Coming back with the familiar sheepskin and tape, Ralph added 11 points to the three he'd already accounted for. City) and W. A. Witte (Fremont, ond place in the Big Six scoring table to Miller, but who turned in a beautiful rebound game, was the only Jayhawker to play 40 minutes. ... Cris Langvardt, the kinky haired football player, went the route for the Aggies . . . Dick Harp potted a long one over the Wildcats' pulled Miller Sets Pace In 44-33 Win; Gain on Missouri By Jay Simon (Kansan Sports Editor) Kansas gained a half step on the league-leading Missouri Tigers when it defeated Kansas State, 44 to 33, last night at Manhattan in a typical Jayhawker-Wildcat battle. Both teams fought desperately all the way and it was only in the last four minutes that the Jayhawks were able to pull away to their 11 point margin. Leading only 34 to 30 with four minutes to go, Ralph Miller went to work and hit twice from the field A.K. Deines, Dominoe, was high scorer with 12 counters, while Funk paced the winners with 11 points. Beta Theta Pi moved a step nearer a playoff berth with an impressive, 49 to 15, triumph over the Triangles. Geiger and Pierce were stars in the Beta's one-sided victory. Miller led the Kansas offense with 14 matches and broke his scoring tie with teammate Bob Allen. Miller is now in undisputed possession of second place in conference scoring with a 10.5 average. Horacek Scores 16 Points However, the basket-shooting star of the game was Wildcat Jack Horacek who chalked up 16 points during the evening. In the first 10 minutes he cracked five goals, four of them long, to keep his team in the running. Miller, Voran, and Harp each collected four points and Engleman two in the first seven minutes as the Jayhawkers skipped off to a 14 to 4 lead, but Horacek swished three in a row to make it 10 to 14, and then Holstrum and Langvardt connected to pull the Wildcats up on even terms and the partisan Aggie crowd of 2,800 up on its feet. With the fans yelling so loudly that the players could hardly hear the referees' whistles, Kansas shot ahead to a 22 to 18 lead at the intermission. Aggies Pull Up Buckets by Horacek, Woolf, and Holstrom pulled the Aggies back in the running. With five minutes to go they were trailing, 30 to 34, but here's where Miller took over to put the game on ice. With six minutes of the second half gone K-State had taken up one point and were trailing only 23 to 28. Miller drove in for a basket and added a point to it when Seelye fouled him in the act of shooting. Harp and Voran each pitched in one-handers and the Jayhawkers were out in front, 33 to 23, with 10 minutes left. Tomorrow night the league-leading Tigers stay home to improve their lead against Iowa State, and Saturday the Jayhawkers leave on a two-game road trip to meet Nebraska Saturday and Iowa State Monday.
