Kathy Wismer KANSAN Conference enables artists to gather, perfect talents By Deb Gruver Kansan staff writer Both well known sculptors and beginning stone-chipers hacked away at pieces of limestone Saturday at the semi-annual Stone Symposium. The conference at Burcham Park, Third and Indiana streets, was sponsored by the North Carolina Chapter of the Lawrence and Baystone Stone of St. Marys and Manhattan. Baystone Stone provided the limewash. Jim Patti, Lawrence resident and one of the organizers of the conference, said the talent ranged from beginners to professional sculptors. south coast "They are just people who want to carve." Patti said. "You can see how they're going to town." The participants got to pick out their own stones and carve their own designs. Patti estimated that between 50 and 60 people attended the all-day conference. Date Ficker, a sculpting professor from Fort Hays State University, brought his work to the conference and showed at the conference. The piece is made of limestone from Ness County and hedge-growth. The sculpture is called a strider because It is a challenge because this sculpture goes against current trends. In a pre-fab world, it is good to take a very traditional standpoint. We have a purist attitude.' Jeffrey Arsenault sculpting teaching assistant it looks like it is walking, he said. Onlookers said it resembled a spider. Ficken said the names of sculptures gave different ideas to different people. The "Ad Astra" sculpture, which will be erected at Burgham Park and dedicated to Kansas, is an example of the different connotations that names of sculptures can vary. "Ad Astra," meaning "to the stars," was painted on the wall of space and the shuffle. In Edel Teftu professor of sculpture at the University of Kansas, said the sculpture had more to do with a star. The sculpture, which Teffd designed, consists of two back-to-back people with vegetation growing between them. Starry skies fill the scene. "Ad Astra" looks like a large piece of stone. "It is challenging to stay on an idea for long and still keep it fresh, he said. It is a challenge because this sculpture goes against current trends in a pre-fab world it is good to take a very traditional stand. We have a paranoid attitude towards this." Jeffrey Arsenault, Chicago senior and sculpting teacher assistant, said finishing the sculpture probably would take about 60 minutes of time as a tenseman is something Arsenaut likes. Although Arsenac prefers the purity of hand tools, air air tools were needed to work on the sculpture. He said air air tools, such as sculpting jackhammers, were more difficult to work with because they demanded more strength and concentration. "After working with air tools for 20 minutes, I feel like I have worked with hard tools for 10 hours," Arsenault said. "There is no air in romance air tools." Several people will be involved in the sculpture before it is erected. JOIN US! A Great American Tradition... DONATE BLOOD!
