Gregor Bruneau, who compiled the flier about vegetarianism, said a few people gave them a hard time but others were interested. "There was a fair response from people who were sincere about vegetarianism." Brune said. The society was formed two weeks ago and had about five members on the board. The community was weekly but at no regular time. When the society is more established, the members will be able to Debbie Altus, the society's faculty adviser and courtesy assistant professor of human development, said the idea originally was presented by Mike Lovry, the president, because he lost of vegetarian meals on camions. Now the society's goal is to educate people about vegetarianism and help people understand the reasons behind the diet. "But it has gone beyond all that," Altus said. Brune wrote in the flier, "Vegetarians play a key role in alleviating world hunger, ecological destruction and livestock torture." The society has a monthly newsletter called "Shakhaahan," which is the guide for the vegetarian way of life. The society's newsletter included Surgical General C. Everett Koop's report that said there was growing cause of coronary heart diseases. The newsletter explained ways vegetarians could compensate for their diet and laid places where they could buy nature burger mixes. Nature burger are made out of like wheat, oats, barley and turkey. Although the society's primary goal is to encourage vegetarianism, the lack of vegetarian meals on campus still a concern to the members. Lloyra, a resident assistant in Immigration, said that on Saturday the weekend she will be vegetarian toulou fish in Haskinger Hall and pass out literature during the week.
