Davies of the University of Iowa bureau of business research. He cites four causes for the instability: 1. Development of centralized labor markets. When business is very active, the bidding for labor can occur in a point that encroaches upon profits. 2. The modern system of banker's banking. The operation of banker's banks, exemplified by the Federal reserve institutions, multiplies this source of instability, with "control" placed in the hands of persons infallible neither in judgment nor action. 3. The so-called “principle of acelaration.” This causes uneconomical over-expansion in certain industrial results resulting general loss of confidence. 4. The "multiplier" principle, which states that, when business is active, a marked decline in the ratio of income to investment occurs. In other words, consumption increases less rapidly than total production.
