Naismith Publishes Data on Development of Child Studies 2000 Children and Finds Age Only Constant Of the three principal factors of a child's growth—age, height, and weight—the only constant one, and therefore the true basis of measurement is age, according to a copyrighted article in the current number of The Journal of Education, by Dr James Naismith, professor of physical education at the University. Doctor Naismith, widely known as the inventor of basketball, has made many studies of physical activity as a table for determining more accurately the physical development of a child. While granting that the body is self-regulating, he indicate ill health, Doctor Naismith maintains that more attention should be given to family and racial charge. ( ) "A boy may grow as much as six inches in a year, while the weights for the various heights are determined by Doctor Naamith says. He would suggest that a child be designated "as tall as the average boy" or 8 years old, and be predicted to age of even 8. Chronologically, the boy might be 7, 8, 9 or 9 years old, the girl 6, 7 or 7 years old, and weight 44 pounds. In most age-health-weight tables, a boy 49.8 inches tall would be indicated as weighing 125 pounds. Doctor Naismith's charts were prepared from data obtained by himself from his hospital, Iowa, Kansas City, Mo, and Winfield, Kan. In combination with his own studies on the reports by Roberts, Burke, Smedley, and Hastings, and in the Wood-Baldwin Doctor Nasimh in his article goes to in suggest possibility of charting individuals relative weight-height, but also to strength, endurance, mental ability, emotional stability, social and moral development. He says that some tests he mentions. Some of these tests, he says have already been fairly well established, and others are still in the experimental stage. Announcements --go to Shirley Casebier. St. ROCKNE FINDS IT DIFFICULT TO OBEY DOCTOR'S ORDERS Famous Coach Would Never Think of Retiring but for Health; Phibiles Is Ailment Chicago — (UP) A question heard often in the middle-west these days is: "How much longer will Knute Rocke remain as active head coach at Notre Dame?" Rockne doubtless would never think Sport Shots Kansas is doped to win over Missouri Saturday night at Convention hall in Kansas City. The Jayhawkers beat the Ichabods 7 to 19 while the Columbia quitter lost close 25 to 24 game to Central. The Tigers have but two lettermen, Campbell and Huh, having had five men declared ineligible, among them Inman and Collins, last year lettermen. Both teams have played one nonconference game, the Tigers with Central College and Kansas with Washburn. The Kansas team is as strong or stronger than last year's while the Missouri squad is considerably weaker. The Big Ten championship year won the Big Six championship. Last year Kansas defeated Missouri in Kansas City 17 to 12 but the Tigers evaded the score later in the season. In Dallas, Jakeyawhawk it win the conference title. But the meeting Saturday night should not be dill since a Missouri-Kansas content whether on the cinder block or in the hardwood is weaker a drab affair. Coach Allen in practice last evening drilled his pupils intensely on defensive plays. Rocke's aliment is phlebitis. Some of the deeper blood vessels in his legs have dried up and he has to keep his legs wrapped with rubber bandages in order to facilitate circulation. He wraps the bandages every four hours. Rockie is under physician's orders to keep off his feet while coaching, but he finds it hard to obey. Before the Rockies beat the Yankees, Rockie could not keep off his feet. Rockie's problem is much the same as Fielding Yout's was at Michigan several years ago. He could have thunk football during the season. Finally, Yout's health be come so precarious that his physicians told him he wouldn't have many years to live. He was coaching. Yout then gave up the job of head coach and became athletic director. Even now, Yout finds it hard to stay away from the Michigan team Rocke has developed some of the best coaches in the country and has 60 former pupils compete with them. One of this group may come back as active coach, with Rocke retiring to the less strenuous job of athletic director in the not fat one. On the football field a student manager follows him around with a chair for him to sit down in, but with a tough game ahead Rockne can't still in a chair. He must get in the office, players, show them this, tell them that Rockin' future may work out something like Yourself. Rookin' is so closely intertwined with the world that it is doubtful if he'll ever be able to get away from it entirely. In his 14 years at Notre Dame, Rockne's teams have won 16 games but 13 and tied three. He has coached Owen C. Carl C. C.
