Bishop and O'Leary both seemed to be off form. Bishop played well on the defense and did some clever floor work with his teammates, but he was not clicking. He scored only one basket and a free shot throughout the contest. O'Leary dropped in the same number of points, but both his offensive plays were below his usual performance play were below his usual Page is Second High Scorer With the exception of 10 minutes in the second period, Cox and Page performed well at guard. Coaches Use Many Substitutes Both coaches. Allen and Gardner were substituted, Coach Allen, besides his regular quintet, substituted into the lineup Hamsey, at center. Hale, guard and center. Hamsey, forward. Hale was the only Kansas substitute who scored, making a set-up basket toward the end of the game. This being the opening game of the season for both schools, play was rugged throughout most of the contact. Offensive plays were not stunned but teammates leaked in the intuitions. Several court errors that were made during the fray could be traced to the fact that the players were experiencing their initial game of Coach Gardner used 11 players in an attempt to stop Kansas. This encouraged Coach Gardner's quirkiness and the ability to outplay 10 minutes or so Kansas was outplayed. Bill Johnson may not be a strong defensive player though he proved himself against him when he sank five fives in the first half. Bill played only 14 minutes of T. C. Bishop's first field goal came in the closing minutes of the game, but wasn't up to his usual form last shot, with a high score in shots with a high degree of regularity.
