UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS MONDAY, DECEMBER 15, 1930 Jayhawkers Have Stronger Offense Than Last Season Defense Weaker Because Coach Allen Loses Bausch JOHNSON AT CENTER In preparing his quintet to meet Washburn in the opening basketball game of the 2015-16 season, Almeida said that the team this year is improved offensively over that of last year, but that the Jayhawker at number 20-21 season is weaker on the defense. Couch Allen is of the opinion that the added offense to the team does not come up to the defense loss. When the basketball mentor lost Jim Bauch, center, through ineligibility, he replaced him with W. Johnson, al-American from Alabama. He has better offensive player than Bauch, but his defensive play is considerable weaker. Johnson is tall and rangy. he will control the center tip against most Big Six schools, is a clever player in the basketball basket. In early season practice games, however his defensive play showed marked weakness on the backs of that Bauch possesses, and this being his first year in college competition he has had no experience against Big Six 2. C. Bishop, all-Blg Six forward had year, is playing his same brand of basketball. Bishop is a natural hitter and a clever half handler. He has the most deadly basket eye of any man on the squat. Last year he lead the Rams in All But Center Veterans Ted O'Leary, the other forward, has shown marked improvement over his court play of last year. Although he is not a strong defensive player, O'Leary has the knack of drawing guards out of position and aiming for shots. Not man on the squad can compare with him in this court art. He is the most serious player on the squad. Well drilled in the fundamentals of the game, he impress players by his ability to be among the best of the Big Six at the conclusion of the season. The Jayhawkers will take the court tomorrow night with two veteran guards, "Fronty" Cox and Lee Fee. They are two of the best defensive players in the Big Six. He is tall and fast, a good dribbler, a head player, and is quick to break up the offensive ball, as he has an excellent eve for long basket shooting. Reserves Are Plentiful Page, a second team all-Big Six man last year, is a cool and tricky player. He handles himself well on the court. In all, Kama this year is somewhat forward, a position, a little winger at center, and relates the same at guard. HOPPEN, who Coach Allen has used in practice games are rost, Skinner, Kraemer, Coen, Phillips, Ramsey, Kent, Rismen, Risee, Flick, Hale, Johnson, brother to the center; Baker, Brazil, Kite, and Miller. Of the players mentioned, Rest, Kraemer, and Rami were said to see much Big Six action this year. The variety quintet has won all of its pre-season scrimmage games against the reserves and offers a defensive form so far. In their first full-time game against the reserves Saturday, Coach Allen's response on the other hand, have played more or less aligually against the variety. The defense offers offensive and defensive court tactics. Ken Johnson, Hale, and possibly Brazil may fit in guard positions during play. Hale also plays on defense against the team. He was a member of last year's squad but did not play in enough games to win a letter. In case of necessity, Ramsey can also play. Jay Janes to Sell Calendars Tomorrow the Jay Janes will have the R. O. T. C. calendar of "The Big Six Champions" for sale in the main building, and the Training building, and Fraser hall. The proceeds of this sale will be used to buy a drill and parade ground for the Jay Janes. Coach 'Phog' Allen and Last Year's Lettermen Five veterans, all lettermen from last year's basketball squad, who will probably be in the line-up tomorrow night, be no good for cagers of the other Big Six schools. O'Leary and Bishop at forwards make a fast pair of point getters, and are sure of regular berths this year. Cox and Pape working as guards are a hard pair to get through. Ramsey, though not a regular last year, showed up well while he was in the game. Other promising men who are are Donald Chapin, Edward Glidee, James Gould, and Russel pounds; Jack Winkle and Ned Rusel, 135 pounds; Ed Hatton, 145 pounds; Herman Mai, 155 pounds; Jay Shroyer, 160 pounds; Sloane pounds; and Milton Soren, heavyweight. COACH AT HARVARD SEEKS LONGER PRACTICE SEASON Cambridge, Mass. — (UP)—Coach Arion Hornewell of the Harvard football team believes his eleven was hand-draped by the president's agreement in the national basketball practice at Harvard, Yale, and Cinnamton cannot begin before Sept. 15. Several early season injuries that have hampered Harvard teams in recent years may be attributed to lack of training and the ability to make major games, in Horner's opinion. He believes the Crismon should begin practice a week earlier, or should play three instead of two games before meeting strong opposition. K. U.
