Griffith of Chicago, official starter, fired the pistol that sent the first field of relay races down the track to inaugurate the 1930 day. University, college and high school preliminaries are on the program today with one final Thirty university, 37 college, and 99 high schools were entered. They represented such widely separated parts of the country as Texas, Texas Minnesota, and Ohio.
