Indian Treasures Ruined Elizabeth Is a Every Man For Himself Destroyed Says Expert Science Service) St. Louis—A large proportion of our Indian archaeological remains have been excavated by hunters and amateur archaeologists unfamiliar with scientific methods, as well as with the museum of the American Indian, New York City, at the conference on Midwestern Archaeology hold here this year. The sites, mounds, cemeteries, and other aboriginal remains have been ruthlessly duped up in the manner of scientific methods. Aberoriginal mounds and burial places are also important memorials of America's earliest history, yet these are constantly being destroyed. Doctor Hodge especially deplored the ignorant destruction of pottery because it happened to be broken or imperfect and the removal and sale of perfect pieces with no record of what circumstances and amount and what circumstances. "Pottery," he said, "is the masterkey, above everything else made by primitive man, to the determination of multiple occupancy through stratification, and in commonality did not find its way very far from the place of manufacture. It stands to reason, therefore, that it is of the greatest importance that such must be made by primitive man, according to the finding of every example."
