The senate asked, "Who canaben, student body president, said Sunday." A prepaid legal services program, funded by student activity fees, would provide legal advice and court representation for students. Leben said. He said that the program would concentrate on legal problems students have with consumer affairs, such as signing leases or buying cars. Leben said be recently had contacted 24 universities that had prepaid legal services programs and received information from seven of them. Leben said, "All that is available now in Lawrence is the Douglas County Legal Aid Society, which is only available to persons who meet certain financial requirements." THE DOUGLAS COUNTY LEGAL Aid Society, 84% Indiana St., offers legal advice and representation to Douglas County residents who meet the required financial criteria. The fund is funded by the Student Revenue, United Way and county city revenue-sharing funds. The prospective client must be either a resident of Douglas County or the case must have some connection with Douglas County. For example, if a person worked in Douglas County or was being sued in the county, he might qualify for aid. Leben said the University legal services programs he studied so far had been funded entirely by University funds or student fee money, Leben said there was a surplus of $72,934 in student activity fee money this year that "IVE ASKED THE Student Service's Committee to come up with a survey to assess the new legal services among KU students," she said. "It will be to fund such a program." Leben said. could be used to start a prepaid legal services program at K.U., but that student opinion of such a program would be the determining factor in its formation. Leben had previously polled students on the question of legal services through a survey he and Ralph Munyan, student body officer, look when they campaigned for office would like a legal aid program at KU. Of the 1,185 responses, 53 per cent answered yes, 38 per cent answered no and 9 per cent had no opinion. Leben said that surplus student activity fee money would be sufficient to start the program and that the student费用 would not have to be increased for at least a year. The survey asked students whether they The student activity fee now is $11.10. HE SAID THE COST of the program would vary according to the number of lawyers hired and whether they were full or part-time. The cost of other universities' programs varied from around $40,000 to $80,000. K. C.
