He took a sandwich along in his pocket for fear he wouldn't be able to get any lunch in K. C. His name? Well, his initials are R. R. A reader of the Kansas City Star *Starbeams* may have noticed along with Tennyson Daft and La Touche Hancock the name "Lawrence Smith." Smith is a special in the department of journalism and takes to poetry much as the proverbial mallard does to water. Announcement. Bud Ritter has the mumps. U. news from the town's stand-alone newspapers here at the University, according to some of the home papers. If, while passing Marvin grove, you hear the notes of the red bird, the owl, the lark, and the crow all coming from one spot, fear not that the heat has gone to your head. It may be only James Butin, the sophomore concert whistler, who is going to whistle for the Redpath bureau this summer and who is practicing imitating the spring songsters. It was a tense moment at the track meet Friday night. Kansas was leading by a few points and the result of the shot-put had not been announced. "Burney Dunham leaned over Lee." The coach, "Say Lee, Won who that pot shot," "Burney" says he wasn't excited, either. After the track meet Friday night, a bunch of congenial Jayhawker rooters dropped into a restaurant for a lunch. The waiter looked familiar. "Where have I seen you before?" queried John Madden. "Who do't an you remembath, sah, pulled through, sah, pulled through, course under Arthur Jerome Boynton togethah. Hoadley's box paper, some dandy qualities at 25 per pound box—A OREAD USES BATAVIA SYSTEM OF TEACHING University Preratatory School Employs Plan Successfully The Batavia system of education is being used in the Oread training school this year and with great success we have had this morning. The system was worked out by Prof. John Kennedy of Batavia, N., Y. about fourteen years ago and since that time has been used in many schools throughout the United States. "The essential features of the system are based upon the theory that at present too much time is given to wholesale recitation and not enough individual instruction," said Professor Trettian. The plan of the system is to have two teachers, one giving instruction continuously, the other taking turns to those who do not seem to be getting along as they should. In the Oread C. A. Yeoman and Miss Mary Morris visit the classes twice each week and watch the reel movies. We are surprised to find out why he is having trouble. 'AAnother feature of the system is the separation of the sexes in certain classes. For instance in grammar, the difficulties which the boy must overcome are entirely different from those which trouble the girl. Also it has been demonstrated that in the younger classes better relations were separated while in the older classes the opposite is the result.' THE FLOWER SHOP It is urged by opposers of the system that pupils miss the helpful stimulus which comes from group work under strong sympathetic pressure and that they are gledged for the dull ones, and that the plan tends to average results even more than the grade system. Professor Trettien and other advocates of the system maintain that just the opposing group of pupils working under it become more independent workers and make better individual progress. Mechanical Engineering The High School Student The people of Kansas will have an opportunity to hear Ysaye at the "Messiah" Festival, April 12th. With one exception he is the highest rank in America. His one appearance in Kansas will cost Bethany more than $1500.00. Owing to the heavy demand, tickets will not be placed on sale in the various towns as has been the case today. He offers a souvenir program, tickets, etc., write direct to Bethany College, Lindsburg, Kans.—Adv. who feels an interest in such a vocation as "And is your wife industrious?" "I should say so. When there is nothing else to do she sits and knits her brows."—Gargoyle. Ysaye, the World's Greatest Violinist, to play at Lindsborch should be encouraged in knowing that the growth of industry, and the modern striving after efficiency, open a broad way of opportunity to the able mechanical engineer. He is always in demand. His position is often one of large responsibility. He is well paid. A four-year course in mechanical engineering with the advantages of fully equipped shops and laboratories, prepares the student to enter this broad field under the best conditions.
