The Varsity baseball nine has been working out daily on the new field, south of McCook, and, favored by pleasant weather, has been getting into good shape for their opening game of the season the battle with the William Jewell Baptists, April 10. McCarty, though he has little left of last year's champion team, is working out a good bunch of infielders from the material given him by last year's freshman squad, and climbers from the "hash-house" league. With DeLongen, the only regular man back except of the battery artists, the coach has had more than his share of work trying out the new candidates in their various positions. For the last two or three days, the coach has been weeding out his squad, and sending a few of the players who have not shown any form back to the gymnasium. A squad of more than 20 is too bulky for any team. The freshmen always ready to give the Varsity a practice game, about 15 or 16 players is entirely sufficient to suit the wants of the coach. Among the most promising of the new players are Ed. Van der Vries, member of the Varsity nine in 1910, Lefty Sproull, captain of the champion basketball five Chuck Buechner, and Bruce Stuewe, well known as a football artist, Jack Loveless, a pitcher in 1913, George Smee, Jay Bond's star twirler, and Wandel, catcher on last year's tycoon. With these men in good shape, and DelLongey, Bishop, and Sommers, all stars last year, will be on hand not worrying particularly about lack of material for his 1914 team. Invitations have been issued for the wedding of Edith Lambing, 13, of Tonganoxie, and Lawrence Pears, of Lawrence, who attended school in April and 11-12. They will be married in Kansas City the evening of April 11. A captain to succeed Roger Coolidge later laceled insurgible, will be sent to New York.
