UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN APRIL 28,1919. William Jewell Players Came Here For Game Through Error Friday Director Bowles and Entire Nine Were Confused Over Story in a Foreign Paper From a misunderstanding of an article in a foreign paper as to a game supposed to be scheduled between William Jewell and K-U. last Friday, and despite the fact, according to Manager Hamilton, that no game was scheduled, the William Jewell nine, with Athletic Manager Bowles, came to Lawrence Friday to play the game. The rain of the night before spoiled all chance of having a game, as far as the diamond was concerned. Coach Hamilton stated that he would have tried to scrape up a team and play the Jewellites, even though no game had been regularly scheduled, but the condition of McCook Field, as well as the other diamonds, was such as to render the playing of a regular game impossible. There will be no practice this afternoon for the freshman and Varsity baseball teams, but hard workouts and practice games will be resumed as soon as the conditions permit. Coach Hamilton has no games scheduled this week for his Varsity squad, and due to the fact that the Haskell team is going to Manhattan to do battle with the Aggies this week, will probably have to do most of the hard workouts in games with the freshman squad. Miss Mary Monahon and Margaret Faulker of Kansas City, Mo., visited at the Alpha Delta Pi house Saturday and Sunday and attended the Sigma Nu party Saturday night. Pan-Hellenic Track Meet Postponed by Schwarz The Pan-helionic track meet, which was scheduled for Saturday was postponed on account of the track being in poor shape, and the fact that some of the organizations did not have all their men on hand. The date of the track meet has been definitely set, but will probably be carried out in the present month, according to Joe Schwarz. The Betas are being mentioned as one of the strongest organizations on the Hill in trick, and are expected by many to win the meet hands down. Sport Beams By John A. Montgomery The Kansas Aggies defeated the Haskell Indians 10 to 6 on the Haskell diamond Saturday in a slow and rather uninteresting game caused by the increment weather. Both teams scored two runs in the first inning and then Haskell took the lead with another run in the second. The Farmers counted six runs in the fifth and added two more in the ninth. Haskell annexed three runs in the final inning. Under similar circumstances Coach Bond's proteges trimmed the Indians on the Haskell diamond in the opening game 16 to 4 showing that Kansas has the edge in the comparative dope. Haskell defeated Kansas on McCoack diamond by two runs but Coach Bond tried out several trial linesups regardless of the results. The great interest being taken in the intra-mural baseball leagues is most commendable. With the men students taking such interest in the national game Kansas should put a championship team in the Missouri valley conference. 'The Des Moines News of Iowa printed the news of the organization of women class baseball teams here in a box with black-face type. It would seem to indicate that Kansas is leading in the interest among women in athletics. Miss Hazel Pratt is to be congratulated on the enthusiasm she has created in athletics for women. Athletic exercise is essential to the physical development of both men and women students. A few of the athletes are contending that all that is necessary to be "dunked" by some faculty members of the University is to let them know that you are an athlete regardless of the scholarship ability of the individual. Should this spirit exist among any of our faculty members it is to be regretted indeed. By some the physical development of a student is believed to be almost as essential as mental development. The ideal situation is to develop both physically and mentally. Among the returning Kansas and Missouri troops this week will be many Jayhawk football and other athletes. The Kansas football men proved their excellent quality by being mostly responsible for he winning of the football championship of the American Expeditionary Force championship in France. With "Scrubby" Laslett and more many letter men back next year Kansas should have a regular football steam roller. Haddock Places in Penn Games Marshall Haddock won second place in the 100-yard dash at the Penn Games at Philadelphia Saturday. Haddock was entered in the pentathlon but did not place. The Kansas relay team was entered in the carnival but did not make the trip because of the poor showing in the Drake Relays the week before. Acacia Nine Takes a Lesson The Phi Kappas won a track meet baseball game from the Acacia fraternity 25 o 1. The Phi Kappas batted around almost every inning, and seldom failed to make the entire circuit of the sacks. The Victory Loan is next.
