UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN APRIL 22,1919. K.U. Quarter-Mile Record Held by Captain O'Leary "Dummy" Returns to University Athletics After Year in Aviation Corps Dorman H. "Dummy" O'Leary, captain of this year's track team, is one of the best quarter-milers K.U. ever had. He was not in school last year because of service in the aviation corps, but had been elected captain in 1917. Soon after this meet he enlisted with the engineers in the old National Guard, and after a few months was transferred to the aviation corps and sent to Columbus, Ohio, for training. After two months here he received his commission and transferred to Payne Field, West Point, Miss. He started for Hoboken on his way overseas November 11, and was held there one month. He was discharged at Kelly Field in January. O'Leary holds the K. U. record in the quarter mile with a time of 50 1-5 seconds. He made this time in the dual meet with Missouri in 1917, winning over Wyatt and Daggy. He was invaluable as anchor man on the relay team and with Fred Rodkey was its mainstay. For some time after his return it was uncertain whether he would come out for track. His return to the team has helped greatly to put he team in the Valley running.
