In a moment of Tyrus Cobbin inspiration Frank Oyster, Beta, sought to steal third. Almost the entire Kappa Sig nine mobilized between second and third to frustrate him. Meanwhile George Nettles was Cobbing it from first to second, almost, that part of the diamond being deserted. Before he could reach the middle sack Brother Oyster was tagged and Nettles, thinking it was the third out, conserved his energy by pausing and turning toward the bench. At that crisis, Hollis, second sockish and yelet Ed, persuaded a brother K. S. to entrust him with the ball. It was only the second out and Hollis's strategy was to tag the wandering Nettles, thereby making the third out. As Hollis charged down upon him, Nettles suddenly sensed his intention and fed back to first base, the far-darting Hollis at his heels, the spectators yelling. In the first Panhellenic game of the season, the Alpha Tau baseball team defeated the Phi Pi队 by a score of 17 to 7. The game was played last Tuesday afternoon on Hamilton Field. "Play ball!" was called promptly at 5 o'clock and from the very first, the hard-hitting Taus had the edge on the part-your-hair-in-the-middle house. The play was fast, the special feature of the game being a triple play in the fifth inning by the Alpha Tau. in the fifth inning by the Alpha Tau Bennett, A. T. O., was the high scorer, bringing in two tallies. Mappa scored 12 points. Phil Kaepernick caught in one run. Four hits were registered over the fence, during the game. Batteries: Phi Psi, Slonaker, Brigham and Drigham, A. T, O., Lenski Medill and Wilhelmy. Sport Beams The first game of the Hase-House schedule is being played this afternoon. The strong Stoie Club team clashes with the Bricken's Cafe team at 5 o'clock on Hamilton Field. These two teams are among the strongest in the league. Varsity players will be excused by Coach Bond from practice on days when they are to play on intra-mural teams, and in case they are needed to mpine the games. Hamilton to Referee In Drake Relay Games Manage. W. O. Hamilton, of the athletic department, has accepted position of referee in the big Drake relay carnival games at Des Moines, In., next Saturday. Kansas will have a mile and half mile relay teams entered in the games in addition to Marshall Haddock in the special 100 yard race. Haddock will also run in place of Dewall in the half mile relay event. Foster is Third K. U. Man to Hold Two Captainies "Stem" Will Lead Baseball and Football Teams This Year— Is All 'Round' Athlete Lewis C. "Stern" Foster, captain of the Varsity baseball team this spring, and captain-elect for football next fall, is the third KU, athlete to be elected to two capacities in one year. "Tommy" Johnson was the first in 1912 and "Scrubby" Laslett, who was captain-elect for both football and basketball this year, was the second. In the absence of Laslett, Foster was elected captain of the football team last fall for 1919 season and had been chosen to lead this year's baseball team last spring. This is Foster's third year in Valley athletics, and he will be eligible again next fall because of the decision to consider this a blank year in athletics. He is an All-Valley man, being picked for the quarter position in 1918, and is a good open field runner and one of the best punters and field generals in the conference. Foster directs the baseball team from shortstop, where he has usually played. He also plays handball and swims, but has not attempted basketball or track, in KU, although he was a pointwinner for his high school track teams at Joplin and Northeast High School at Kansas City. While a junior in Joplin High School he was captain of the football team which won the championship of southwest Missouri. While the teams are away on their trips, Foster is one of the comedy artists, and often livens things up with impersonations of a Jewish second hand clothing merchant. Joe Schwarz, Manager Entry Blanks Mailed To Kansas High Schools For Interscholastic Meet Sixteenth Annual Event to Come Off on McCook Field May 3 May 3 Senate Eligibility Rules Do Not Limit Candidates The meet is being held a little earlier than usual this year but Manager Hamilton expects an exceptionally large attendance as the war has caused an increase interest in athletics of all kinds among the men students. The reason given is that athletic exercise was required by the military officials to develop the health of the enlisted men. Entry blanks for the sixteenth annual state high school interscholastic track meet to be held on McCook Field May 3 are being mailed to all the accredited high schools in the state this week by Manager W. O. Hamilton, of the athletic department. The entries must be returned to the athletic management before April 26. Determine Only Right to Hold Office After Election or to Participate in Athletics Elibibility of a student to hold office or to participate in intercollegiate athletic events is determined by the senate eligibility committee of which Prof. H. C.Thurnau is chairman, and is determined according to the rules adopted by the committee on University organizations other than athletic. "The senate eligibility committee, however, is not the power which determines the eligibility of a student to run for office. This power lies only with the organization to which the student in question is a candidate," said Professor Thurnau. There is an eligibility committee existing within the W.S.G.A. which determines the eligibility of a candidate to run for W.S.G.A. A similar organization exists within the Men's Student Council." The rules of the committee on University organizations other than athletic say that "If the student is registered in a course which requires 27 to 31 hours, he must complete 27 days. "These rules also state that "No student shall participate in inter- collegiate sport unless he has pass- ed all entrance requirements, unless he has passed all work regularly re- quired in his university for the year of residence previous to participation, and unless he is satisfactorily carry- ing full work in the current semester." This would seem to mean that any student who has an incomplete grade in any subject is ineligible to hold office. According to Professor Thurnau there are two kinds of incomplete. First, those which are equivalent to a condition as heretofore given. Second, those which indicate a paper unwritten or a quizz not taken but which the instructor thinks could probably be easily made up by the student. It is the habit of the eligibility committee to take into consideration the circumstances of the incomplete and the probability of that condition being removed before the candidate is installed in office. Coach Ferguson is helping greatly by umpiring the intra-mural games. Officiating at the first game of the Panhellenic Tuesday afternoon to the satisfaction of all concerned.
