Coach Bond Has Hopes ForReal Baseball Team
Varsity Will Open Season With First Game at Haskell April 15
After missing practice for two days because of the rain and cold weather, Varsity candidates are again working out on MeCook Field this afternoon in preparation for the opening of the baseball season Tuesday afternoon at Haskell. There has been little opportunity for real workouts this year and the team has not yet played a practice game. A workout will probably be held Saturday and an other Monday before the initial contest.
Coach Bond has plenty of material for the battery positions and a world of good material for the infield, but it is the outfield that will probably give him the most trouble. "Dutch" Weltmer and Johnny Bunn will probably alternate on the receiving end at the plate.
Harms, Pierce, Marxen and Slawson are working every day on the mound. With Captain Foster out for practice and Milner, a new man at short-stop, showing good form in the field, the infield bids fair to be one of the strongest departments of the team. Lenborg, regular third baseman last year, is back for his old place and Lashley, fresh third-sucker of 1918, is also out for a position. Frederick, a new man, is out for first, and Bunn could easily be used in the infield if it is found necessary.
In the outfield, Oyster and Keeler, letter men last year, and Smith, are the likely candidates for a regular position. Vermillion and Judkins, of last year's freshman team are working for regular positions and Desmond is trying for the outfield.
The Victory Loan is next.
Norman Ross, formerly of San Francisco, has established a new world's swimming record for the half-mile. Rosa's powerful trudgeon crawl carried him to seven other records in the course of the same swim.

The meet was conducted in the Illinois Athletic Club's 60-foot pool. Ross will join the I. A. C. after his year of unattached competition required under the American Athletic Union rules.

K. U. Composer's Works To Be Played at Ball
"Springtime Was Made for Lovers," Prof. Maxwell Ferguson's waltz, which was played for the first time at the Follies, and Marc Law's "I Just Must Dance," will be played as dance numbers at the Billboard Ball at F. A. U. Hall, Saturday night. This is the annual dance given by Theta Sigma Phi, professional journalism sorority.
Programs will be in violet and green, the sorority colors. Billboards will meet the guests' eyes bot on the programs and in the decorations.

Haskell Institute will officially open its track season Saturday afternoon with a duel meet with Baker University. The meet will be called promptly at 2 o'clock. Sixteen events will be participated in which are as follows. 100 yd. dash, 1 mile run, 440 yd. dash, 120-yard high hurdles, 880 yd. dash, 220 yd. low hurdles, 220 yd. dash, 2 mile run, 1 mile run, 16 pound shot put, broad jump, javelin, high jump and discus throw.
