UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN APRIL 7,1919. Manager Of Athletics Approves Alumni Plan For Memorial Stadium "I am told by Lieutenant Colonel Burdick that most of the reserve officers training corps work here will be in athletic work. be in athlete "Another fundamental reason in favor of the athletic field and stadium is found in the fact that at least 90 per cent of the many visitors who come to the University every year attend athletic events while here. I venture to say that more visitors come to see the big football games here every year than all the other attractions put together. I believe the citizens of Kansas want their boys to develop physically while at the University. Almost All K.U. Men on Nation's Honor Roll Were Athletes, Says W.O. Hamilton A memorial athletic field and stadium for the University of Kansas Men who gave their lives in the world war, as suggested by the Kansas Alumni Board of Visitors, has been enthusiastically endorsed by Manager W. O. Hamilton of the department of athletics. He believes the suggestion of the Board of Alumni Visitors, who represent the taxpayers of the state, is by far the best suggestion for a memorial at the University that has been made so far. been made "The athletic field and stadium", Mr. Hampton said, "which in reality form the front door to the University, would be by far the most ornamental structures that could possibly be built at the campus. And in addition it is the only logical memorial to the University men who gave their lives in the world war, because an overwhelming percentage of the men were athletes or were interested in athletics. the Universi- ties. "I might add, too, that practically all memorials suggested so far, such as the trophy rooms, arches, and statues could be included in the new athletic field and stadium to wonderful advantage. I do not believe that a more fitting memorial could be suggested than that of the athletic field and stadium proposed by the Board of Alumni Visitors." The athletic department has been saving funds for such a stadium and athletic field for several years and the savings would be added to the funds that were given. Spiders Foil Professors by Spinning Fine Webs Because a tribe of spiders decide that the glass case which encloses the sysmograph in the basement of Blake Hall would make an excellent home for their families the professors who have charge of the earthquake recording instrument were for several days rattled as to why the delicate recording needles of the sysmograph insisted upon standing up in the air instead of resting on the recording drum. Mr. Hazen opened up the case and pushed the needles down several times but they refused to stay down. Finally by chance Professor Kester drew his arm through the air above the instrument and found his sleeve covered with spider webs. He then noticed that several webs had been attached to each of the recording needles and were holding them in the air. When the needles were pulled down the webs elasticity kept them from breaking. The spiders however were not the cause of there being no earthquakes recorded for the last two months. Charles Rodgers Attends University of Grenoble Corp. Charles Rodgers, p18, of Co. M, 137th Infantry, is attending the University of Grenoble in Southern France. Although about four hundred American soldiers have been sent to this University he is the only man from his company. The students are given room and board in private families, where they are made very comfortable, if they can succeed in making their wants known. Attendance at French lectures for a practical mastery of French is required for a certain period before enrollment in other courses is allowed. Scenic pleasure excursions to the surrounding mountains are given the American students every week end. The term for which they enrolled lasts the four months from March 1 to June 30.
