Hamilton Sends S. O.S. For Men for Positions On Kansas Track Team
Coach Needs Hurdlers and Vault ers on Whom to Show His Skill as Trainer
An emergency call for more athletes for every position on the Kansas track team, was issued by Coach W. O. Hamilton, this morning, in an effort to develop a stronger track team. Coach Hamilton wants four to six men competing for the position on the team, for he realizes Missouri will be stronger outdoors than indoors in track this season. The Kansas Coach especially urged that mentry for the high jump, pole, vault, and hurdles.
With only Wetty as a real competitor in the hurdles, Coach Hamilton has had a big hole to fill in both the low and high stick events this winter. Wetty and Heizer have been doing work around the 11-foot mark this season, but the K.U. coach wants more vaulters to make the work interesting for these Varsity athletes. Both the pole vault and hurdles are events in which Hamilton has more than once shown his skill in developing men here in these two events. Ever since he left Kansas City and coaching high school athletics there he has made the work of developing hurdlers and vaulters for the Jayhawkers his hobby.
The high jump this year has been the weakest event in years for K.U. Neither Butcher nor Judkins have been able to leap much higher than, 5 feet and a half. This is a miserable showing compared to the jumping of Treweke and Rice, who always made the leap about 6 feet or better. Rice has been graduated and Treweke is still in the service.

Outdoor track work started this week and Paul Murphy, assistant coach, who is a former Northeast high school athlete, is working hard to get his distance men in shape for the Drake Relay games, at Des Moines, Iowa, April 19. A mile relay team and possibly a four-mile relay team will be entered this year in the relay. The mile team is one of the best that has represented K.U., in years, for seldom has a Jayhawker mile relay quartet been able to defeat the University of Missouri indoors and it is almost unknown for Kansas to defeat the Tigers twice in their favorite event. Missouri Kansas Meet May 10
The annual outdoor track meet between Missouri and Kansas teams will be held here May 10, according to an announcement made tonight by Manger W. O. Hamilton. The first outdoor valley conference meet for the Kansas relay team will go to Des Moines, Ia., to compete in the Drake relay game.
Richard Reynolds and Clifford Johnson of Kansas City, Mo., are guests at the Phi Kappa Psi house.
Four Games With Ames Open Baseball Schedule
Competition will be Keen for Positions on Varsity Nine— Practice Under Way
The first Missouri Valley conference baseball games on the Kansas schedule were arranged yesterday by Manager W. O. Hamilton with Ames. A series of four games will be played with the northern school, the first series of two games to be played on McCook diamond May 5 and 6, while the return two will be played at Ames, June 6 and 7. It was announced also that games will be scheduled with William Jewell, but no definite dates have been decided on.
The Kansas squad has started real practice on McCook Fold, and every effort is being made to develop a championship team. The squad did batting practice yesterday evening under the supervision of Coaches Bond and Ferguson, and from all indications the Crimson and blue fans can expect a real team this year. It was with
this end in view that Coach Bond eliminated the regular spring football practice while Professor Ferguson, who is a former star on the Harvard and Columbia nines offered his services for the same reason.

The first practice game has been announced for Monday afternoon between opposing Varsity nines. Plenty of candidates have reported on the squad, but both of the coaches expressed the hope that a great many more would come out immediately in order that the very best material in the University may be available for the final team.

Captain Foster is trying out at his old position at shortstop. Loren Weltmer and Bunn are getting back into the game at the catching position.
Slawson is again on the mound. Lonborg is back at third, while Keeler is playing in the field. Wardy Weltmer, also a letter man, has gone to Rosede to complete his medical course, and it is possible he may be able to compete in a few of the regular games in his old position in the field.

The freshman baseball squad also got into action outdoors yesterday afternoon for the first time this season with eighteen candidates out to make the team. Coach Wedell put his players through a light workout and will continue to do so for a few days. Later more intensive practices will be instituted in preparation for hard practice games with the Varsity nines a little later in the season.
