ONCE A BANQUET HALL—NOW A MUCH OVERCROWDED LIBRARY now includes the Woman's Rest room and the small class room to the north. There was no librarian who gave her whole time to the work until Miss Watson, assistant librarian for nine years, was elected head librarian in 1887. Soon after this the books were moved to the north end of Fraser Hall, and the library comprised what is now the registrar's rooms on the east side of the hall, and the extension department on the west side. This was the arrangement until Spoonce Library was built. Smutetz was the first librarian of this section. The second story of Spooner Library was used at first for banquets and other gatherings of the sort, and was the scene of several Commencement dinners. It could hold about five hundred people. The two small rooms of the west were used as kitchens and courses were served from each one. Later the upper story was used by the art department as a painting and drawing room. In 1903, it became the history and sociology library. Miss Spooner Library was built in 1894 with money given to the University by William B. Spooner of Boston, Mass., an uncle of Frank H. Snow, former Chancellor of the university, Mr. Spooner* $75,000 and Mr. Spooner* used for the library, and $15,000 for the Chancellor's home. Before the erection of Spooner Library, the University had no library building. The books which the University owned were kept in a room at the south end of Fraser Hall which section About 8,000 books comprised the library when it was moved to the north end of Fraser Hall. There were 20,000 books when Spooner Library was built. At present there are 126,000 books. The Board of Administration decides what part of the state appropriation shall go to the library. This sum is divided among the heads of the departments of the University, who decide what books shall be put in the library. Brownlee, Harold J. ... 13 Capt. Carson, Paull ... 11 Capt.
