Scamman, the Shawnee County district coroner, ruled the death a suicide. He was appointed by Gov. Fred Hall to the state Supreme Court on March 1, 1956, with 10 months remaining in his third term as attorney general. Fatzer, 79, was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head Saturday at his Topeka home. Mr. Fatzer, who served on the Kansas Supreme Court from 1956 to 1977 and was chief justice from 1971 to 1977, also served as the state attorney general from 1949 to 1954 when he became well-known for the gambling raids he led, mainly in Wandotte County.
