The resolution calls for church bells across the country to be rung for one minute at noon Oct. 27, Anderson's 42nd birthday, and asks the United Nations to declare a simultaneous International Hostage Day. The Associated Press Anderson, chief Middle East correspondent for The Associated Press, was kidnapped March 16, 1985, and is the longest held U.S. captive. The resolution would set aside Oct. 27 as National Hostage Awareness Day. David Aikman, foreign affairs correspondent for Time magazine and chairman of the Journalists' Committee to Free Terry Anderson, said at the news conference that he believed publicity had helped keep Anderson alive. Aikman said high school students were being asked to participate in an essay contest, writing about "How I would cope with being a hostage." The winner will receive $1,000.
