University Daily Kansan Friday, September 29, 1978 11 Hurricanes looking for upset of giant-killer Kansas Sports Editor By LEON UNRUH The Miami Hurricanes are in about the same position this weekend as the KU Gators, which will be playing at the Tampa Bay. The Hurricanes are 0-2, and in possession of a dubious offense and a despondent defense. Both losses came from nationally ranked teams. Both squads are so loaded with freshmen that a long week in English 101 could really be a good start. And like KU, Miami considers itself ready to do a little giant-killing. Kansas lost its unblemished week last weekend by up-setting No. 8 (now No. 18) UCLA. "They played some awfully good football in their first two ball games," KU head coach Bud Moore said yesterday. "But they didn't beat UCLA." The Hurricanes, who have the spindly legbs left for a mascot, lost to Colorado 17-6. They meet KU at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow in Memorial Stadium. A Band Day crowd of 45,000 is expected for the game, which will be televised in the Miami area. 'THEY're AN awfully good football team for their record.' Moore said. "I can look at their game films and see where they could have won. I'd be hard pressed to look at our films and see where we could have won our first two games." -UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN- The things that impressed Moore probably are embodied in two players: Don Smith and Ottis (two T's) Jerey Anderson. Smith, a 5'6" 90 pound around table, Sports had 79 tackles last season and has roiled up the league, the almost always double- summed by the offense. Smith, a 6-5, 250-pound defensive tackle. He was a first-string Playboy magazine choice for All-America honors this fall and won second-string Associated Press laurels last year after Miami's 3-4 season. Ansonor is the halfback who three two option passes for touchdowns when Miami beat KU 14-7 last year. Those were the only two completions of his five attempts. HIS TOTEBOOK shows him gaining 6.9 yards every time he carries the ball this season. His only touchdown came on the first play from scrimmage against Florida at midfield. He's compared favorably to Chuck Foreman, Miami '73, who makes the Minnesota Vikings look good. His 2,238 career vardes are a Miami record. The quarterback is sophomore Kenny McMillian, who started Miami's final two games of last year and held on to the job when the 1978 season started. He suffered cartilage damage before the Colorado game but returned last week. His statistics so far are mager: 4-for-9 nassive for 40 vards and five vards rushin. Three freshmen will start for the Hurricanes. Among them will be tight end Mark Cooper, who caught Miami's only touchdown pass this year. Kansas' defense may be hurting a little to ston this bunch, but. The offense on the veer and pro-set plans, gains an average 138 yards per game rushing and 97 passing. The defense gives up 163 per game rushing and 113 passing. Of KU's four defensive tackles, only Greg Smith knows whether he will be starting tomorrow. Charles Casey and Mike Beal will find out later. The others all succumbed to knee injuries. Offensive guard Franklin Kinz may go both ways. THE SECONDARY has a new face, too. Frank Wattelot, a sophomore, moved to first-stretch strong safety this way after Joe Tumpich had a knee destroyed against Things aren't all orange blossoms on offense, either. If there is a bright spot in Moore's carriage, it carries an 4.1-yd average into the game. The good news is that starting fullback Max Edger returned to practice yesterday, apparently recovered from a pulled hamstring. The bad news is that he pulled the other hamstring yesterday. If he doesn't start, Sam Smith or Tim Jones will. The punter from Miami, Coral Gables has been somewhat inconsistent. Lou Saban, Miami's coach, reportedly compared him to a baseball-slugger with a batting average of .350 and an RBI count of one. Harriers face tough race By RICHARD WAGSTAFF Sports Writer Tomorrow morning, the University of Kansas cross country team will try to continue its winning ways at the Oklahoma State Jamboree in Stillwater, Okla. But, unlike the victory at the Wichita State Gold Classic two weeks ago, the Jayhawks will be up against stiffer competition. The No. 1 seed will also face teams they know nothing about. "We're going down there with hopes to win it, but we really don't know what to expect," Bob Timmons, head cross country coach, said. Timmons said the meet would be very competitive because there will be teams from the Big Eight and teams from the Southwest Conference. The University of Arkansas and the University of New Mexico are stronger teams at the meet. Timmons said The Jayhawks will be led by sophomore Paul Schultz, who finished second in Wichita. The same team that went to Boston was taking the trip to Stillwater with one exception. Freshman Jeff Campbell, who won the open division at the Gold Classic, will join the All-Star Team. Men's track hires coach Jerry Hudson, a high school track coach from Neoah, Mo. has been added to the University of Kansas track staff. Bob Timmons is Kansas country and track coach yesterday. "We feel Jerry will be an excellent addition to our staff," Timmons said. "We know how he operates from the summer he takes on in the field camp. He takes on responsibility well." Hudson, who will work with sprinters and hurdlers, replaces Stan Narewski, who was recently named head track and field coach at Furman University in Greenville, S.C. education in 1968 and completed a master's degree in education counseling in 1974. Hudson, 33, is a native of Girard and attended Pittsburg State University. He served as president of the American Association. He was a four-year letterman in football and track while at Pittsburgh. One of his teammates on the track squad was KU's Jake Foster, who coach Gary Pepin, who coaches the jumpers. Umpire clinic to shorten play of hockey sets The games will be shorter but that won'tessen the competition in this weekend's game. KU's squad, 2-3-1 for the season, will join about 10 teams in the sessions tomorrow, which are played primarily to benefit KU. We are trying to upgrade their official abilities. Beth Ether might return to the KU lineup Saturday, Easter suffered a broken nose in game action last weekend and a doctor was to remove packing from the nose yesterday. Beebe said she expected the Illinois team to pose the greatest competition for the Joys. Diana Beebe, KU coach, said the Jayhawks would play three games, each with two 20-minute halves. A half in field hockey usually lasts 35 minutes. KU's opponents will be a club team from Edwardsville, III., Maramec Junior College and Cape Girardieu, Mo., University. Maramec Junior College is in St. Louis. If Easter plays, she will wear an ice beetle face mask to protect the injury, face beetle 12 East 8th St. FRIDAY FLOWER FEATURE Carnations $ ^{3.50}$ a dozen Give your weekend a break from the boringness of life.
