Angel Bostock's funeral draws crowd of 1,500
LOS ANGELES (AP)—Funeral services were held yesterday for baseball star Lyman Bostock and California Angels teammate Ken Brett told mourners: "He enlivened our clubhouse and took us out of the darkness of defeat. But he was a winner. He enjoyed life so much because he had so little at the beginning."
Bostock, 27, was shot to death Saturday night while riding in a car in Garry, Ind. After three seasons with the Minnesota Wild, he tied five-five-year contract with the Angels for $2.7 million.
"When he found the road to success, his first thoughts were to help the people who helped him," said Brett, who is the Angels' plaver representative.
"We are all better people for having known Lyman and having him touch our hands."
THERE WAS a standing-room throng of about 1,000 for the services at the Vermont Square United Methodist Church and another 500 were outside.
The Rev. John C. Bain said, "Lyman was compassionate, generous, strong and full of fun."

He was visiting relatives in nearby Gary when the fatal shotgun blast was fired through the window of a car driven by Bostick's uncle, Thomas Turner.
Police said the target apparently was one of two women in the car, Barbara Smith, the estranged wife of Leonard Smith, who was arrested on a murder charge.

Volleyball team begins NU play
Facing its first strong challenge of the season, the KU volleyball team will begin play today in the Nebraska Invitational in Lincoln. Neb.
Nebraska finished third in this region last year.
The Jayhawks perfect 6-0 record will be in jeopardy as some of the most talented volleyball teams in the nation compete in the two-day tourney.
Kansas will see its first action in the round robin tournament against Nebraska and Wisconsin.
"Anybody from Texas is tough," KU head coach Bob Stanclift said Wednesday night after the Jayhawks swept Benedictine and Emmoria State.
Tomorrow morning, the Jayhawks will tangle with Southwest Missouri State, a team that has finished seventh in the nation for the past two years, and North Texas
The tournament will be divided into two divisions playing round robin. The top two teams from each division will then enter the tournament to determine the championship.
