Schneider Investments For apartments/rentals, call Mark Schneider 842-4414 Sports Writer by CARLOS MURGUIA Although the women's track season does not officially begin until Dec. 9, KU's team already is working to gain an extra edge on their competition. Events that demand the most strength in javelas are the weight events—the shot put, javelas. Weight events demand hard work "It's important to do the correct type of weightlifting," Anderson said. "They do lifts that will strengthen that particular part of their body that they need to." To win these events, an athlete has to be in top physical shape before the season starts, and the Jayhawks' weights competitors want to win. KU women's track coach Teri Anderson said the weightlifting was an essential part in the conditioning process of a weight athlete. The weight members are Christie Tumburger, Linda Newall, Tammy Rose, Gayle Crane, Debbie Douglass, and Carol Engelder. The athletes, since the last week of August, have been lifting weights at 250 pounds. ANDERSON SAID that the weight members lifted every other day and that repetition and not gross weight was emphasized in the weight lifting. Anderson said each athlete had her own individual lifting routine and woken on her one said that after stretching and loosening up, the team did bench presses, clean jerks, squats, presses, snatches, curls and neck and shoulder lifts. "All of the athletes have to improve their explosive power," she said. "They need explosive power because all of the weight events are events in which you have to be able to tap your body's physical strength instantly." Super Cuts For Guys & Girls Call 842-1144 Newall, 1978 National Junior College shot put and discuss champion, said that since she wasn't used to working with weights, she had noticed a big difference in her body "FOR COMPLETE weight skills, an athlete has to work on technique and strength." Newall said. "The better com- panies, the easier it is for you to throw farther." Tumburger, the best weightlifter on the team, said that weightlifting was beneficial for them. "To strengthen my upper body I do bench presses, tricep lifts and neck lifts," Tumburger said. "For building my lower body, I concentrate on doing squat lifts. Since I'm smaller and more weight athletes, I concentrate for strength I lift also to improve my quickness." Tumburger said that building strength before the season started enabled an athlete to perform at its best. "For me, the weight events are 35 percent physical preparation and 65 percent mental," she said. "By gaining strength now, I won't have to worry about it during the season and I can concentrate more on the event itself. "THE STRONGER YOU get the farther you're capable of throwing, but if you're better mentally prepared than the competition, that'll give you an extra advantage." Douglas said that strength and con- trol were important to a weight athlete wanted to throw consistent "You have to increase your body strength for the body to be even capable of throwing," Douglas said. "Once you know you're physically capable, it's up to you to get mentally prepared and to go out and do it." Crane said that since concentration was the key to winning, it was important that an athlete had as few mental lapses as possible. "It hard for other people to realize how much concentration an athlete has in preparation for an event," Crane said. "An athlete who is better prepared mentally and concentrates can beat a physically stronger opponent who doesn't concentrate." And Crane foresees all of the weight conditioning paying off for the Jayhawks in the game. "We have the potential of being the best track team in the Big Eight, if we utilize all of our talents," she said. "Barring injuries, I can't see how we can miss."
