University Daily Kansan Thursday, September 28, 1978 Volleyball squad still undefeated By KEN DAVIS Sports Writer A zero still occupies the loss column for the Kansas volleyball team, but the Jayhawks had to struggle to keep it that way last night. KU football games over Emporia State and Benedictine College at Robinson Gymnasium to move its record to 6-0. The record includes a victory over Highland Junior College last week that recently was added as a varsity match. But the Jayhawks did not perform up to par last night, KU head coach Bob Stancil "We're still undefended—that's one way to look at it," Stanciff said. "I'm pleased to win but we didn't play nearly as well as we have been." The Jayhawks took the first match of the night from Emporia State by scores of 11-15, 15-9 and 15-10. Against Benedictine, KU swept two games by scores of 18-5 and 19-8. In another match, Benedictine downed Emporia State, 15-12, 9-15 and 15-12. "That fine edge wasn't there," he said. "We had some communication problems KANSAN Sports and we've been doing a good job there. Timing and teamwork are things that you only get from playing together. You can't be the perfect practice. So I knew that would be a problem. The match against Emporia State was close during all three games. Neither team "Emporia State has a good blocking team," Stancill said. "They're a better blocking team than we are. They're a good team and it just went back and forth." could put a string of points together to take control of the games. Before KU rallied to win, Benedictine jumped out to lead of 5-1 and 5-0 in the final match of the night. Benedictine's smaller team game against Chippa's hawks was in adjusting to their game. "Benedictine has a good defensive team," Stancliff said. "The offense didn't run a lot of attack and our defense is more geared to a fast, attacking team. They hit a lot of players." KU managed to pull ahead of Benedictine behind the strong spiking of Lauren Frost. Frost was a bright spot in an otherwise sputtering KU offence. "When we did run our offence, we weren't able to get the ball down on the floor." Stanclift said. "Most of the time we spiked right into their defense." Royals ready for playoff series KANAS CITY, Mo. (AP)—So what if those same Yankees have come from nowhere to put together one of the best clutch finishers in baseball history? "I don't think in a five-game series it really matters," said John Wathen after the Royals achieved an expansion team first by American League West title Tuesday night. So what if the pinstripes from New York also boast a left-hander named Rguidry, probably the best pitcher in either league these days? No matter, say the Kansas City City Boston Red Sox, it makes no difference to it. "Granted, Gudryd is the best around this year, but anything can happen in a five game series. It will be awfully nice to beat him, but it really doesn't make any difference." BUT-ALTHOUGH none of them will come out and say it—many of the Royals will. the Yankees who took a one-game AL East edge over Boston into last night's game with Toronto. The Red Sox, meanwhile, hosted Detroit. Royals Manager Whitey Herzog, for example, is already calculating how to counter Gudry, 23-3, who has a 1.74 earned-run average. He has beaten the Royals twice this year and would probably pitch two games in the playoffs. "I might just bring up a guy from Omaha to face him the first game," joked Herzog, "and just my chances in games 2, 3 and 4." THE OPENING two games of the playoff will be Tuesday night and Wednesday afternoon at Royals stadium, then the series will move to the home of the Eastern Division winner for contests Friday night, Saturday and Sunday. The Royals hold a 6-5 season edge over the Yankees, including a 3-2 mark in Kansas City, but they have not played New York since Bob Lemon became manager July 26. Against the Red Sox, Kansas City is 6-4, 4-1 at Rutland Stadium. Herzog says he already knows—but isn't saying-you will pitch the first two games for Kansas city against either opponent, but he did another decision before the playoffs begin. The Royals have 26 players eligible for the 2018 season, and they will reach the 25th post-season roster line. Most likely, it will be either veteran Steve Busby, who has pitched only twice since rejoining the team late in the season after lengthyarm problems, or rookie Rich Gale, who is 14-8 but has won only one of his last five decisions because of a sore shoulder.
