University Daily Kansan New tenure policy sought 7 Tenure and promotion decisions need more concrete guidelines, Ron Calgaard, vice chancellor for academic affairs, told the University of Kansas chapter of the American Association of University Professors executive committee yesterday. A written tenure and promotions policy would help the process, he said. Present policy states that tenure applicants must either have taught at KU for seven years or have had three years of prior service elsewhere and four years of KU "Each year we have had to make difficult tenure decisions in one to three cases," Calgaard said. "We would be in a better position than the staff of prior services didn't have to be counted." Thursday, September 28, 1978 I have to be counted. Calgaard said he would not count some kinds of teaching experience for tenure and nominal decisions. Experience that occurred more than a certain number of years ago, totally unrelated teaching experience, experience prior to the earning of a degree, experience with different types of school should be counted in tenure and promotions. Calgary said. ANY CHANGE in the present policy should be stated in writing, he said, and would not be made retroactive. Such a change would be approval of the Kansas Board of Regents. The AAPU executive committee instructed the AAPU committee on academic freedom and tenure to formulate such a committee that it will execute the committee by Nov. 1. In other business, the executive committee, responding to a motion by Elizabeth Banks, associate professor of Equality and Women, proposed a equal retirement benefits for men and women. The issue will be discussed at the Sept. 30 Kansas AAUP convention at Emporia State University. AT PRESENT, KU employees pay 5 percent of their salary and the University pays an equal amount to the Teachers Insurance Annuity Association. The amount an employee will receive each month upon retirement varies, but the amount a woman receives is about 15 percent less than a man with the same years of service and salary. Banks said. "This happens because the actuarial tables say women live longer," he said. Chapin delivers music, philosophy Bv BONNIE DUNHAM Staff Reporter As he travels across the country giving 200 concerts a year, Harry Chapin says he sees "a kind of warmth that radiates" but also sparks many speaks that aren't being brought to the public. The singer, songwriter and philosophy major said in a pre-concert interview last night at Hoch Auditorium, "I am worried that I will be frightened that are frightened away from their dreams. One of Chapin's dreams is to end world hunger. He has been appointed to the Presidential Commission on Domestic and International Hunger and Malnutrition. The commission was established after four months of active lobbying by Chapin. "I like to feel my life matters," Chapin KANSAN Review said, "I am looking forward to the 80s. I think has been the most boring decade since." "ITHINK I am going to get better as I get older. I think I will be a better storyteller at 50 than I am now. I know I am better at 35 than I was at 25." Despite the lack of play his music gets on the radio because he is tall, Chapin said. "It was a special time." "I am out of step with certain commercial aspects of the music industry," he said. he called the Bee Gee a "triumph of American merchandizing." More than half of his concertes are benefits to help the World Hunger Fund, Chapin said. In the past four years, he and his band have donated $2 million to the fund. During his three-hour concert last night before an audience of 1000, Chapman mixed his own tunes. Chapin gave his traditional encore, "All thems in a circle," after the crowd came to the feet of her. THE FIRST standing ovation came early in the concert after he performed an acappella version of "Mail Order Annie" without a microphone. One of his newly written songs, "Jenny", written for his six-year-old daughter, was featured on the album We Are Born. Chapin said the band is working on a new live double album.
