Wednesdav, September 27,1978 13 Javhawk volleyball, 3-0, opens home season Bv KEN DAVIS Sports Writer The KU volleyball team will put its unblemished record on the line tonight when it plays its first home court matches of the season. Kansas, 3-0, will be challenged by Benedictine College and Emporia State University in a pair of matches beginning at 8:30 p.m. in Robinson Gymnasium. Both teams should provide a great deal of competition for KU. Benedictine and Emporia State are two of the small college teams in the UU head coach Bob Stancill and yesterday. The Javhawks have downed Benedictine our times in the last two years but, Stancillip said. Benedictine cannot be taken lightly. "We were fortunate that we won all those matches," he said. "They're a smaller team but they are aggressive and scrappy. They are pretty well coached, too." LAST YEAR KU KEUSED with victories of 15, 16 and 15-10 and 14-15 and 15- over Benedictine. Benedictine's only loss this season has come against Kansas State. "They played K-State a week ago," they said. "They gave them a fairly good match." Emperor State had the best record among the small colleges in Kansas last year. Stancill took the KU women were looking forward to playing Emperor State. The Jayhawks will be looking to avenge a loss suffered against Emporia State last year. Emporia State handled the Jayhawks in the 10 and 15-10 in the only matches between Emporia State and the Jayhawks. "WE'RE LOOKING forward to playing them here on our court," he said. "Again, I'm going to use this as a guide in comparing our team to last year. "They have a hard-serving team, so our service reception should get a strong test." KU will be playing for the first time since last Wednesday. Stancliff said that the team had used the time off to correct mistakes, and that he had been very pleased with its result. "I was very pleased, especially with our match against Missouri Western," he said. "They have a good team and we played very well against them." Stancilf said the most pleasing development last week came during the first game of Wednesday's match against Miami. The game ended in Kansas-Iowa City, GU won the game 15-21. "That game was very close," he said. "That was the first time the girls had played under pressure, and they showed a lot of poise." NCAA begins investigation push WASHINGTON (AP)—The National Collegiate Athletic Association takes the offensive for the first time today in a year-long probe by Congress into the amateur sports organization's enforcement of its rules. J. Nell Thompson of the University of Texas, NCAA president, and Walter Byers, NCAA executive director, will be the first to testify in the two-day hearing—which will include testimony of the House Investigations and Over-sight subcommittee. Arthur R. Reynolds and Charles Wright of the NCAA infantry committee will head the list of witnesses invited to hear the testimony. The subcommittee, at the instigation of Rep. Jim Santini, D-Nev., has been investigating whether NCAA policies violate antitrust laws, whether its investigative methods provide for due process and whether the penalties assigned to member institutions, athletes and coaches are fair and equitable. quadratic Santini called for the investigation into the NCAA's enforcement of its rules in the summer of 1977 after the University of Nevada-Las Vegas basketball program was placed on two years' probation for recruiting and other violations. FOR THE past year, the subcommittee has taken testimony from representatives of several universities, including Mississippi State, Minnesota, Michigan State, Oklahoma State, University of Denver and Nevada-Las Vegas, all schools placed on probation for alleged violations. Most of the testimony has been critical of the Until now, however, the NCAA has not been able to give its defense. In a letter to Thompson last August, the subcommittee asked that the NCAA respond at the hearing on 46 recommendations made during the previous seven days of public hearing. The NCAA is expected to do so. Among the recommendations : * The member institution should be informed at the time a complaint is lodged with the NCAA and provided with a description of the nature of such complaint. - All individuals, including former student-athletes and representatives of the university's athletic interests, subject to a charge of possible violation of NCAA legislation should have the right to notice of charges and the right to appear with counsel before the NCAA committee on infractions as well as the NCAA council should an appeal be made. - INVESTIGATIONS OF POTential NCAA infractions should be parallel and contemporaneous between the involved member institution and the NCAA enforcement staff - The accused party should not have to prove innocence, i.e., when the investigative findings of the institution and the enforcement staff differ, the burden of the proof should not shift to the accused party. *Situations that go beyond the involved sport; i.e., violations in a football program should not result in a penalty.* KANSA CITY, Mo.
