Gura pitches Royals to title
KANAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Left-hander Larry Gura押三 a-hitter and Arnos Otis drove in a pair of runs last night as the Kansas City Royals locked up their third consecutive American League West title with a 4-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners.

After Leon Roberts clubbed his 22nd homer of the season in the fourth inning to give Seattle a 1-4 lead, the Royals tied the game in the sixth on Hal McRae's infield single, Fred Patek's double to left and Frank White's RHI grounder.
George Brett walked one out later to load the bases and Oisland it grounded a single up the middle off Glenn Abbott, 7-14, to drive in Patek and White. Patek Lcocka lined a

Gurra entered the game with the third-best winning percentage in the league, 789, despite not joining the starting rotation until June. He walked three and struck out none in winning for the seventh time in eight decisions.
THE ROYALS, who had eight hits,
downed the Mariners for the 12th consecutive time, equalling a club record the Royals set against Boston over the 1970 and 1971 seasons. The loss was also Seattle's ninth straight and their 100th this year.
Abbott dropped his fourth consecutive decision.

the holes on the lips of Ewing Kauffman, Joe Burke
and Whitey Herzog.

But the Royals, by 4% plays in mid-May, reclaimed the top spot later and after July 17 were out of first place for three free days.
CALIFORNIA WAS the last opponent to fade, but the Angels did not go without a scare, winning three out of four in an early September series at Anaheim to draw within one-half game.
Four teams—Kansas City, California, Texas and Oakland—remained in contention through July. With none of them hovering between the top and bottom of the rankings,
It's just that, while the California Angels and Texas Rangers were gaining attention with their free-agent acquisitions, the Royals were going about winning their third straight American League West title.
Kansas City was picked to finish second by most forecasters and even third by some. But instead the Royals produced their most mature team yet, overcoming early inconsistency and a rash of key injuries.
So owner Kauffman, General Manager Burke and Manager Herzog have even written a note. Note, however, it is the nerf-player who everyone has heard of.
NO, THE 1978 campaign was nothing less than an old-fashioned horse race, and if the Royals had less talent than some of the other teams in that era, they would have won.
The Royals' third journey into the division throne room lacked the season-ending tension of their first title run in 1976. And gone was the thrilling stretch drive of last season, when they won 16 consecutive games.
It was a season that both excited and tested the Royals faithful, who turned out more than 2 million strong, even though Kansas City's 1.5 million metropolitan population is the smallest in the major leagues.
But by the time the Angela visited Kansas City a week later, the Royals had to march again. The team then delivered the ball by punching by taking two of the balls.
Neither Clint Hurdle, touted as the successor to departed John Mayberry at first base, nor speedster Willie Willem, named as a threat to Arnos Ols in Center field, turned in the sensational rookie seasons forecast—but both were respectable.
THE SPRING training trade of Mayberry to Toronto left a power void in the Kansas City attack, and the situation was not helped when George Brett and Al Cowens, both hit 22 and 23 home runs on April 14, respectively, hit the ball a week of the season, the Royals had less than 100 homers as a team.
On the mound, right-hander Dennis Leonard had what is becoming a typical season for him, losing eight of his first 11 decisions. But Leonard, who finished 20-12 after a slow start in 1977, rebounded to a 20-17 mark.
Looled a stand-up organization by many observers—at least in light of the wheel-and dealing done by California and Texas—the Royals nevertheless won their third division title with eight players who were not on the 1977 edition.
The depth, in the form of infelders Jerry Terrell and U. L. Washington and outliders Hurdle and Wilson, was especially dramatic in 1972, when he
Overall, the Royals, a shortage of power, were an aggressive bunch, stealing over 200 bases and leading the league in scoring.
They were especially effective at home, winning nearly seven out of every 10 games at Rovals Stadium.
It is almost enough to make Kauffman, Burke and Herzog exchange that smile for a full-fledged grin.
