In his message the chief executive conceded "the Soviets are quite likely ahead in some missile and special areas, and are obviously ahead of us in satellite development. However, it is my conviction, supported by trusted scientific and military advisers that—as of today the overall military strength of the free world is distinctly greater then that of the Communist countries." President Eisenhower announced to the nation in a radio-television address Thursday night that he had amed Dr. James R. Killian, president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, to head the drive and ordered him to proceed with ie "utmost possible speed." Styles Bridges (R.-N.H.) said following a talk with President Eisenhower today that next year's defense budget may be increased by one to two billion dollars to meet the cost of the nation's "accelerated" missile-satellite program.
